I think IDM has really blossomed in the last few years. Explorations into
a variety of new sounds has helped it to flourish again and even gain a bit
of mainstream recognition through some of the better produced trap,
moombahton and other world beats. Here's a short selection of some of the
best 'fringe' IDM I've heard in the last few years:

Rena Jones - Driftwood This is IDM at its very best. Very few artists can
match her prowess with interesting drum layers; but she takes it to the
next level by sampling her violin, stand up bass and cello into the mix.
This is sort of like that YouTube gal that's playing violin to Dubstep and
such, but done much classier. Truly a gem and a must listen.

Telefon Tel Aviv: Fahrenheit Fair Enough... This is another masterpiece,
but old... 2001 old. Still, trypt to the max and one of my all time fave
albums.

Sora - Re.Sort. This is becoming increasingly difficult to find... or even
find reference to.

Jaga Jazzist - Kitty Wu It's hard to say if Jaga Jazzist is technically
classified as IDM. I mean really, what is IDM, but electronic infused
jazz? This is all live... I guess the theramin bass lines might just slip
it under the radar. But listen to those drums! That's 3 drummers, each
doing their own intricate little bits. If you like an organic feel to your
IDM, this is definitely a must

Above song done live. Quality isn't great, but notice how close to the
above track this is.

Charles Lloyd - Caroline No Well we've already danced around jazz a bit,
so let's go full on contemporary jazz. This is likely my favourite song of
all time--and the song that convinced me that IDM and jazz can really be
one and the same thing. Take special note of the drummer: Eric Harland.
I've been keeping a keen eye on this guy for about a year now and very
impressed by everything that he's invited to be a part of. Being invited
to be part of the Charles Lloyd Quartet is already astounding, but he's
also teamed up with Chris Potter and Dave Holland--all names to take note
of if you enjoy this song. I've introduced dozens of people to this song
and so far haven't found a soul who wasn't taken by its magic

Isao Suzuki w/ DJ Kensei. This is only available on iTunes... Guh... Bug
it's a fusion of Kensei on tables or pc or... who knows... something
electronic with the legendary Isao Suzuki on stand up bass. Not the best
selection from this album, but there isn't much to choose from without
buying the album...

Sango - Otra Vez This is Latin-American trap at its finest. From the drum
layering through fantastic bass, this album rocks. Sure it reeks a bit of
the 'drop' mentality. It hits hard, but remains very interesting and
pleasing to the ears.

Also love this album. 'tis the album that got me into Sango in the first
place

Don't think Trap belongs in IDM? Try this out. Heavily sampled from old
NES games and 80's flix. This is the very album that got me into trap.
Still not a lot of trap I really enjoy, but this really does it for me.
