this is a patch built with the program max/msp by autechre. it just generates autechre like beats ad infinitum. i listened to it for like 4 or 5 hours once, and it doesnt really change that much. sort of subtle, in that autechre way. its cool. i think generative music still needs to be explored further. it could be the future of electronic music. who knows. maybe someday we will laugh at the fact that we used to listen to the same track over and over again. later, greg davis autumn records coming very soon: "autumnature" featuring tracks by colongib, jet jaguar, lackluster, hrvatski, fizzarum, ml, cex, marumari, asterisk, zammuto, i am robot and proud, kettel and lexaunculpt. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

So, I'll be the asshole and ask: Is this patch of Autechre's available anywhere? One nice thing about Cycling 74 is that they have "MaxMSPPlay" available as a free download, which allows you to simply play back existing Max/MSP patches without having to purchase the full software. I don't want to go against the wishes of Autechre by requesting something they've only distributed to friends, but if there's no limits to distribution, somebody hook me up :) For background info on Max/MSP, btw, check out http://www.cycling74.com. Cheers, Bill greg davis wrote:

I was reading an interview with Kid606 and he mentioned how Autechre are one of the only people he knows in the "scene" that are majorly paranoid about trading patches. They give the patches out to friends, but with locks on them so they can't disect them to see how they were made. Seems a little silly to me, but I suppose you have to respect that. So my point is that, if you WERE to get ahold of this patch, you'd probably only be able to play it, not edit it. So lets have it people! Very true, it is locked...and small as fuck(like 4k or something) its pretty impressive if you ask me. I think one of my friends made a recording of it, i gotta get a copy of it from him. maybe i can share it with some people, as i belive keeping things "rare" is pretty selfish damnit. Everyone should be able to hear it...its yer right! Sprek http://spit.to/onesick At 05:31 PM 1/7/2001 -0500, NuBreaks wrote:

A recording would be fine. I'm really not obsessed with having the internals of the patch exposed anyway, as I don't yet own Max/MSP (not until this summer, when I make my purchase). Not to sound contradictory, but I also don't really believe it's "everybody's right" to have something that Autechre made & gave to a couple of friends, especially in this age of software synthesis. Specifically, I mean this: an artist's patches are really becoming their custom instruments (with the hours of development and practice that go along with that), and I don't want to simply steal that work away from an artist who hasn't agreed. Similar to the Autechre thing, I'd *love* to see and hear some of Kit Clayton's Max/MSP patches, but hey, I have the music that he created with them, and that's all I feel I have a "right" to. Sorry if I'm coming across as self-righteous, but I've given a bit of thought to the issues involved as I'm considering a move to more software-based synthesis and composition myself. This is an interesting point, and maybe one that a lot of people haven't thought about. With programming environments like Max/MSP, people design and build their own instruments. Not sounds, instruments. Entirely new methods of creating and performing electronic music are percolating in the minds of those who are willing to spend hours in front of the screen watching numbers flow around in little networks they create. bbn -- bbn@saoul.com 604.551.5227 ula pula 3079 w10th vancouver canada v6k 2k7 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
