lower and its a no-name all the way and compatibility problems arise
(hard-to-find drivers, firmware issues, etc.). Higher and you are paying
more for who-knows-what.
My recommnendation would be get a Plextor CDRW. Their 8x and 12x models are
both excellent and for consumer grade they make the best CD writers out
there in terms of compatibility, timely firmware upgrades, and reliability.
There also also other brands which sell Plextor drives with their name on
it. For example the Iomega 12x10x32x drive is a Plextor drive and was on
sale at CompUSA a few days ago for $99 after $30 rebate. Plextors do an
incredible job of ripping audio with no errors too. Many lesser brand give
you pops and static. You get what you pay for with a Plextor and when they
are sale you can pick them up for a steal of a price as with the
Iomega/Plextor 12x for $99. Wait for sales and use online merchant coupons
and you'll get a good deal on one.
