It seems like there are a lot of people disappointed with the new BOC Ep. That sort of surprising, I think it's WAY more solid then the last Bola or Aphex Twin releases. It's nothing mind blowing, but then again few releases are these days. I've had it on repeat for the last few days and think it's pretty good. ===== SWOPE TRANSMISSIONS - Listen on KUCI.org every FRIDAY Evening 6-9pm (Pacific) http://home.earthlink.net/~efrans/swope-transmissions __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Absolutely agree (with atomly) about Windowlicker. One of the best things he's done. Fuck SAWII. Just listened to that yesterday. A lot of it is just fuckin' new age. Come one, Windowlicker is total shite! The video and cd cover is pretty funny I'll admit, but the music is damn weak. The only reason I haven't tossed it in the bin is because of the cover.

What is so brilliant about it? It has a lot of recycled sounds he has used elsewhere, and is not even close to the brilliance of some of his early work.

Far from new age. Perhaps it's a little too deep for ya. So do you feel ambient in general is pretty boring? I rate SAW II up there as some of the best.

Well first of all the title track's my least favorite thing on the EP, but his programming is still damn good on that and unlike anyone else's. The second track also has some great programming and is pretty complex by IDM standards. And the last track is a very beautiful piece and the concept of creating a whole piece out of sounds from a music box is great. The thing that makes it great is that he's doing things that no other IDM artist is doing, he doesn't repeat himself and is constantly evolving. I mean when was the last time an IDM record really surprised you ? I think besides Autechre he's basically the only one doing anything new in IDM and a lot of people seem to hate them for that. (Please keep the flames to a minimum.) There are a few other names doing things, but I don't think they're doing things that are as significant.

My friend, if you think that's "deep" music you don't know what deep is. And no, I don't think ambient stuff is boring, but if I made a list of my favorite "ambient" records there'd be a lot of stuff on it which people probably wouldn't typically label as such. Eno's "Music For Airports" is probably one of my favorite records though.

Well, we just have different opinions. It all sounds great to me and I generally prefer the psot-HAB material to what came beforehand. IMHO: Windowlicker is a pure pretence shit. That's the most commercial and uninteresting work he's done and I'm sure that was exactly his intention when he released it. That's a perfect way to go out of releasing music at all - which he promised lots of times before. After listening to such shite I'm not that worried about him going out as the further works might be even worse... Though I admit the video was funny as hell.. 8) Classics rulez. Didgeridoo forever! Windowlicker innovative? In what?!? In making good artist sound as crappy muzak? Eclectic, yes, but that's a one listen album while Classics is always a welcome guest in my cdplayer. It was innovative at 1990 and it blew many heads at that time, mine included though I've heard it later on.

im beginning to think that some of you dont know what the fuck your talking about. will wait thou, before making any conclusions:) nannou is fast becoming one of my favourite aphex twin tracks, especially if he did what i think he did, some of the resonance sound like it might actually be played, ie real as opposed to generated sound, recorded with expensive mic even if its not, its still beautiful melody and method and mauver, while it might not be the greatest, still has its strong points(in this case, point, that one track, ohh, dont know what it is, as i havent listened to it in months, record player broke and as for the new boards of canada, i cant give an opinion on it, but everythings else ive heard from them is bliss, on its own and combined with the rest of the repitore. it doesnt have to be complex to be good, something i believe people are beginning to get confused over; autechre are good because they put the effort in and pull it of, because they know what they are doing, every time, with genius, while others simply pull it of. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. So a disagreement in tastes + not knowing what we are talking about. Interesting

Some producers are very skilled making thing sound live. Whether it was live or not, or whether they were expensive mics or not doesn't really matter to me. In the end it the track was mildly interesting to me.

Left me cold. I didn't think Soup was as brilliant as some made it sound. There were some very nice tunes on it, but I expected a little more. It also sounded a little dated, not that that is bad.

I heard nothing but negative reviews, so I wasn't expecting much when I first heard it. When I finally did I was surprised, because it was pretty nice.

Simplicity is often better.

I don't disagree with you that the title tune isn't that great.

I don't Aphex Twin is known for sloppy programming. I'm sure anything he does will be programmed well, whether the tunes are good are another matter. The second tune isn't that great imho, the third track is ok, but I wouldn't rate it very high compared to a lot of his other tunes. I was not impressed at all with this ep. Funny video & cover, props for that.

Conceptually I guess it can be kind of interesting to ponder how he did it. Software, etc. etc. I've had too many discussions about analysing music, I don't really care the about the method..just the end product.

I didn't find anything unique about him jumping into the whole drill n bass thing for a spell. His past work was really meaningful to me. While material like Windowlicker & Come To Daddy might be amusing for a short time, it's not really stuff I would choose to listen to. IZ-US was a great little tune.

I agree there are not many artists putting anything new and refreshing out there. Same with drum n bass these days. That's perhaps why I am probably buying mostly jazz & trip hop/nu jazz stuff.
