i haven't heard the song yet, but i recall reading something earlier about the first "lyric" version, the religious community version. perhaps something on the boc website, but probably not. plus it makes a lot more sense, esp. since it's likely sampled from old TV. plus you can count syllables. "in a religious community" is 9, whilst "with everything just give me energy" is 11, 10 at the least with some slurring. i suppose we'll all have to wait until the end of november to really figure it out though. unless you chaps feel like giving mp3's to everyone who wants to try deciphering it. :) cheers, /derek

well, i'm not too sure about the balloons bit, but "bollocks" is definitely there. the other word sounds similar to bollocks and begins with a "b", so i just assumed balloons, but it could be a myriad of things. but the picture along with the title makes the "bollocks" like make even more sense... i like a lot of the imagery they create around their sounds (non-aural imagery).

I can't be the only one who thinks this is only so-so at best. I mean, track 1 is fine, but nothing really amazing. Track 2 has a great twisted melody in the background but the rest of the track is just so-so. I hate the self-titled track, that vocoder is just shit in my opinion. Last track is nothing special, sounds like 20 other tracks I've heard before. All I know is I won't be running out to buy this one. Be surprised if I even keep the mp3s of it. -Nathan

I like the new EP, and gets better as time goes, but for me, when I originally heard it I thought there was a certain warmth lacking. Not in the mood of the melodies but rather in the actual recording. It seemed more 'digital' and clean, less murky than I was used to. Almost as if the duo recorded the tracks into their shiny new G3's, and then proceeded to play around with the Orange Vocoder cubase plug in... but I dig it now. I think it's even more stripped down than previous work, which I like... nate On Tue, 12 Dec 2000, Ian Pojman wrote:

there were obviously very high expectations for this new EP and im sure that no one felt it more than boc. Personally i really do enjoy this release, although the first track and the title track were the ones that stuck out immediately for me. these kind of releases serve best as (for me at least) space out listening sessions. when i listen to autechre or the like sometimes i concentrate too hard on the technicalities of the song (which at times isnt bad) and dont just let myself zone out and appreciate the flow and the mood of it. ive heard some people say that the songs are too unchanging and too looped based. loops arnt bad! with looped music i can concentrate on other things or just not concentrate at all. its definitely an EP with a certain mood in mind, so it gets my vote for one of the best chill-out albums this year. leif np are you that retail snob ? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

how so? most people hadn't even heard of Hi Scores until Music Has The Right To Children came out! and I didn't hear much acclaim about Boards of Canada until early-to-mid '99... and Music Has The Right To Children came out in '98... hmm... cheers, /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

dude, like n:h said.. It sounds all too clean. n:h seems to like that but I dont. That clean, refined sound is the antithesis of why I liked earlier BoC. They got arguably: 1) less hip-hoppy, 2) less analogy-mellowy-smooth, and 3) less 'unrefined' and raw. I didnt hear hi scores until after I hda heard MHTR either, but the time elapsed since the production makes no difference. MHTR adn Hiscores -are- way different, but the difference between the new EP and the style i heard in those two and the MASK100 track is vastly greater. Props to the MASK100 track btw. if they had went that way or even cloned MHTR, (which MHTR was kindof a clone of iteself ANYWAY), I would haev been more pleased with what they put out. Granted, I still respect BoC alot I think theyre great, and I'll still kick back to the new EP. I juts had high expectations that were dropped - autechre and RDJ and MoM and metamatics and stuff like that fail to disappoint me so... bu its hard to compare such geniuses of different styles. well, although i have been enjoying it, i have to agree with nate on the fact that it sounds pretty pristine (in a negative way) compared to their other stuff. the warmth is there for me; I just think the grittiness/detuning of their synths and crunchy drums were what gave that warmth uniqueness in the first place and made me come back to it so often (when I bought both Hi Scores and Music Has the Right to Children, they never left my cd player). regardless, i have been listening to it a lot- with the exception of Zoetrope which is kinda fucking boring- and just hope that BOC continues to evolve. btw, nate: you know you love your orange vocoder!!! z

I think all you guys are funny - it's BoC for goodness sake - it's about music that's simple and nostalgic. Geeze, it's not like they're about pushing the envelope of soundsculpture or deconstructing music to its most minimal essence. I think it's as simple as : Boards of Canada - take it or leave it. Really, there's plenty of great music to pick apart... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
