I don't get it. Can someone explain that? They all seem to like N'Sync and Ricky Martin and things like that. As far as I can tell, no females listen to or write IDM (unless you count Mira Calix, but since Ae writes all of her stuff, it doesn't really count). I mean, I guess it's just something genetic or whatever that they can't appreciate IDM. I'm not holding it against them or anything.. it's just sort of sad that they can't understand music unless it's sugar-coated and mass-marketed directly to them. If there ARE any girls on here who actually do listen to IDM, I'm curious to know which tracks your boyfriends used to introduce you to the genre? _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. One day in the real world, and I wake up at 4 am to find this thread!!! Xcuse me Joe, I take offense to your comments. Not only do i work for a label that has an amazing electronic female artist - Riz Maslen (Neotropic) when I ran my Save The Vinyl imprint in the mid-90's I tried to sign her, I also signed another artist, currently working in LA, called The Angel whose done production work with Smith & Mighty and has her own Channel 60 (i think?) projects. I also know Mira Calix from when she worked @ Ambient Soho on Berwick St London when I was running Save The Vinyl on the same road. As well as Nina Walsh, who humorously created Sabrettes and even got the Scottish Tartans to acknowledge her Tartan colours officially. Andrea Parker used to sit at the door of Sabresonic every Friday night with Nina and these two powerhouses created some diverse incredible IDM Music. In fact, I have tried to turn many people on to the emotional power of Andrea Parkers work on Mo Wax. It is nothing less than stunning. I have always been a fan of IDM music - the more out there or obtuse (and I am talking about a twenty year plus love affair with sounds from Eno to Ryuichi Sakamoto back to Jon Hassell and Aphex Twin) - the more abstrakts the more I like it. It was I who dragged a kicking journalist from Muzik Magazine to see Laurie Anderson show in London a few years back (I've seen her live performances going back to the early 80's)- He had to apologize for being so clueless and being so incredibly impressed with her talents. Several years ago I had the privilege of working on a compilation put together by Scanner for his Electronic Lounge that I off regularly attended, and Sprawl is part run by Iris who under various alias does her own photography, djing and music making. And then there's Irene on this list who dj's in South Africa while juggling a family of a couple of kids.... My last boyfriend turned me onto to Northern Soul and American Jazz - altho he was from the North of England, he knew more about the history of Black Music in America than most Americans know. He shamed me when I thought a Maceo Parker sax solo was a guitar break in a review of a record I once wrote. I turned him onto Derrick May's Strings of Life when it came out in 1988- he was instantly converted to house. I told Gilles Peterson in 91 that techno was jazz, listen to the drum beats. Gilles later told me I was too clever. Please do not insult the intelligence of women on this list, or did you just make this post just to get everyones reaction? Duh, ha ha -- i took the bait. (dont get me wrong, i am no flaming feminist) PS We've already had the thread about who is the best looking female eletronic artist.....We also had the one about which idm artist is gay...does any of this matter if the music is what we're all here for????

neither do i-- i mean, opinions like this are so respectful and open-minded that i can't see how women can be anything but uncontrollably drawn towards the IDM community. so yeah anyways, howzabout that city centre offices comp? glyn --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

ok, I came into the office this morning with this crazy thread and every one getting their panties in a flaming bunch. if you approach stuff like this in a tizzzy-no point gets made. I'm not going to lie.It _was_ a female who took me to my first party. It was a male who got me into techno and it was a male who got me *further* into IDM. However, I took it from there. First said male didn't do much for the education of music but just simply introduce me to the right crowd (ie.no drugs), I had to learn basically every thing else on my own,as our *friendship* faded. Second said male just introduced me further into something I already knew existed and was already part of my record collection. (perhaps we should talk about women not buying vinyl too) Lets also be truthful with ourselves. If you go to a Autechre show or Kid606, how many females are there? I bet a penny that we're outnumbered. Bid deal, more cute IDM boys for me to talk music with. Our loss suddenly became our gain (ooo i can hear people's panties bunching). I'd rather go to an IDM or techno show, I'm guarenteed more straight males that way. I love house when I need it and I love jungle too (the deep dark twisted shit-not that LTJ sissy stuff). Perhaps why most men (esp. straight ones) don't like house is b/c they have to let go of themselves and their installed insecurities and dance. Here's a clue: a man who can let go a bit on the floor is much more appealing than a wallflower IMHO. Let me make it clear that I'm not into this music to catch a man, but _please_- I am human, in the prime of my 20s, choose to stay single and not butt ugly...cut me some slack for living-please. Joe, the Mira Calix is one of my current favorites. If she has Ae writing her stuff- well that's one BIG point for her already. If Ae wanted to produced me coughing with the sound of elephants sneazing in the background-I'd be flattered. If you are looking for some teenage ass, might I suggest a rave or two. You could become the favorite, older "unkle" with the magic pills. If your post is your idea of tact might I suggest putting down your joystick and Vaseline and joining us in the world- but please buy a comb...bed head went out with grunge (hmmm..another thing most chicks weren't into). Your point was clear after the first two sentences. As we say on 313.."back to the music." Diana Potts NP:Nicole Willis, Soul Makeover (nice for a winter morning) and yes Joe, her husband-Jimi Tenor- produced her album. -----Original Message----- From: joe jackson [mailto:xcylobx@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, December 04, 2000 10:42 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] Why don't girls like IDM? What freekin planet you on babe? Open your eyes and see...while there may be fewer girls than guys interested in the electronic wonder child named IDM, we are here....and perhaps the reason you can't 'see' us is because we are soooo damn cool ;-> Oh yeah, and about this, "I'm curious to know which tracks your boyfriends used to introduce you to the genre?" thats because all of the girls who like idm like to stay ON TOPIC, so we don't post very often...yet, we feel we have to raise the rights to our gender and post when we see a dumbass comment like that...or they don't feel like taking this goddam abuse, so they choose not to join the list...i happen to stay on this list for good music information...and i post when there is something good MUSICALLY to talk about...or, when someone pisses me off enough because i have a vagina, i like to tell them what the hell i feel...
