8) Finally someone brought this thread into attention! When I purchased my amp/spekers set in August my life changed completely... 8) Such an enlightment and profound pleasure is unknown to those who do not have real hi-fi sets in their condominimum. My advise is to follow my choice: Rotel 792 MkII for amplifier; and BMW 603 S2 for speakers. (I have Rotel 950 CD player for two years now and am pleased with it on 100%) peace Alien

I've had a Peavy 2.6c for a couple of years and powered studio monitors, and PA speaker with it and it's always come through a champ. Speakers are a tougher call; anything that can fill a backyard is probably not going to sound as nice at home listening levels. For pure party volume buy some used PA cabinets -- Peaveys are OK but Electrovoice or Citizen mo' better. You can do some fairly cheap experimentation on them replacing drivers, and it's not a huge deal if you rip a cone -- PA speakers are designed to be field serviced. For home listening look around for something used -- I still love 70s vintage Boston Acoustics and AR speakers. Since you can spend basically an infinite amount of money on speakers, I'm more interested personally in just finding stuff that's dirt cheap and sounds good. The BA's my son is using were $6, and the ARs I have in reserve were $10, but need a little more work before they're tip top stylee. In my studio I use Alesis Monitor Ones, which are dirt cheap and sound pretty good. They're power hogs, so if you get 'em don't try and run them loud off a 100 w/ch amplifier -- they'll clip out and fry the tweeters. Never had any problem with 'em running a 150 watt amp. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, my speakers/the PA at the Brickhaus is a pair of Peavey SP-2s (semi-old) that I bought for $300. Heavy fuckers, but tanks. However, someone somehow blew the cones on both of them. Plenty of sound out of the bottom, though. I rented some SP-5gs for the Chomsky show this last weekend and they were great. Smaller, lighter (10 pounds only, alas), and 200 watts more (500 v 300). Too bad I won't be buying any speakers any time soon. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

oh.. those B&W603 S2s are *really* nice.. i bought some a couple of months back + a 15yr old amp/preamp: Naim NAP-140 Power Amplifier Naim NAC 32-5 Pre Amplifier which are virtually identical to the present models http://www.naim-audio.com/html/products/amplifiers/_nav/amplifiers_fs.html but about 10-20% of the price... i was aiming for about us$1000 too.. and this setup was a little over that price.. but what you get is *so much* worth it. . .. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
