While I don't know exactly what they use to make those sounds, it's pretty easy to make a close approximation by doing two simple things: dulling the sound of your synth (cut out the higher frequencies) and adding an LFO (the depth and rate - especially the rate - should be pretty low). so you have a muffly tone (make sure your envelope has a healthy sustain/release time) that bends the pitch up and down slightly. if you do this to just the right sound, you will say to yourself, "holy boards of canada". i've only actually tried this on a juno106, but i'm betting just about any synth that allows you to control these parameters could be made to sound BoC. I suppose there must be other features that BoC synths have in common (aside from the fact that they probably have some secret hardware-hacked synth) which could be easily imitated. if anyone else has experimented with producing BoC-like tones and has further advice, please share. jon __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Mike Paradinas tells me Marcus and Mike use two SH-101's. They just only recently bought a computer, so just imagine what the new album will sound like (if they use it for the album, that is). I hear sh-101 sounds all over in their music, so that's a good piece to start with. It almost sounds sometimes like they may have dumped parts of the song onto a reel to reel and fucked with the playback speed. Certain parts of Aquarius come to mind. You know how it seems to speed up in the middle of the track? -- bbn@saoul.com 604.551.5227 3079 w10th vancouver bc canada v6k 2k7 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
