While I don't know exactly what they use to make those
sounds, it's pretty easy to make a close approximation
by doing two simple things:
dulling the sound of your synth (cut out the higher
frequencies) and adding an LFO (the depth and rate -
especially the rate - should be pretty low).
so you have a muffly tone (make sure your envelope has
a healthy sustain/release time) that bends the pitch
up and down slightly. if you do this to just the
right sound, you will say to yourself, "holy boards of
canada".
i've only actually tried this on a juno106, but i'm
betting just about any synth that allows you to
control these parameters could be made to sound BoC.
I suppose there must be other features that BoC synths
have in common (aside from the fact that they probably
have some secret hardware-hacked synth) which could be
easily imitated. if anyone else has experimented with
producing BoC-like tones and has further advice,
please share.
