sticking toilet paper in your ears is actually _worse_ than nothing at all - the paper provides very little or no protection from hearing loss and can exacerbate the problem by holding open your ear canal, which would normally constrict when under sonic assault. if you want to protect your hearing, you should be wearing earplugs with at least a 26db noise reduction rating. ethan

Thou talkest shit, sweet friend :-) I have run this by my ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat specialist) whose learned opinion confirms that toilet paper is _better_ than nothing, as is cotton wool. He further advised to go to a gun shop, who supply small earplugs (not those wrap-around mufflers that block out everything.) I am aware that specialised earplugs for musicians do exist, however, here in South Africa nobody stocks them. I've been offered silicone stoppers used by swimmers when trying to explain what I need. It's not like I spend my life out clubbing y'know! But I do find the sheer level of volume way above necessary and I also value my hearing (or what's left of it). I don't want to start a flame war, and we HAVE discussed similar issues here before - just a quickie in self-defense. Thanks.
