it seems like the curse of trance is that some of it is the most mainstream electronic dance music out there, and, as such, constitutes a sort of crappy pop-disco. pop-song chord changes, exhausted synth sounds, dumbass 'soaring' melodies and bombastic drum rolls... but obviously it's not all like that. (and there's certainly enough four on the floor techno driven by hammering sixteen-note synth lines that one could be forgiven for believing the two genres were somehow related.) milling around the record store I've been checking out some psychedelic trance singles and thought that some of it sounded great in a tripped-out electro kinda way, seemingly shorn of many of the problems I have with trance. anyone know about this stuff and think that any of it meets the impeccably high standards of IDM? kurt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hullo, the only trance release i've picked up in the last year or so (and it's not very recent at all, it might be over a year now that i think about it) was Sasha's "Xpander" release on Ultra. i think it dodges the trance-by-numbers stereotype and actually backs up his reputation to an extent as he produced these tracks himself. It's impeccably produced and put together, if nothing else. And the tracks are actually pretty good IMHO. Much better than most trance I've heard (which is not a whole lot, admittedly), and certainly than whatever it is that BT is doing now (definitely not trance), not my tea. matt

I don't know about the other 3 tracks on this EP, but the 'Expander' track is made in colloboration with people formerly known as Spooky and it has moments very similar to Spooky's old hit "Little Bullet". Sasha's ability to produce music alone is still doubtful ;) By the way, is the loop on "Baja" really sampled from Ae's "Chiastic Slide"? Not as obvious Ae sampling as on ZZ Top track, but recognizable... Nick.
