Good thread... I'll be boring and vote for two classics: 1) MC Shan - "The Bridge" (Marley Marl production) - I think Marley Marl sampled himself on this one for the title: there's a good story here about the sample specifically that I can't quite remember... 2) Rob Base - "It Takes Two" - from the track with the same title by Lyn Collins, the Female Preacher... .John. Wishing he had Marley Marl's "House of Hits" in right now... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ofra Haza on Eric B and Rakim "Paid In Full" Remixed by Coldcut - I have the original record but am 2 lazy to go look for the title. Apparently when the record hit the Top 40 in the UK and Eric B was asked to perform to the remix on Top of The Pops they had never heard it & it all went a bit wack, but maybe I got the story wrong. When I heard it in Rough Trade in San Francisco in 87/88 I had to have it. At 3:27 pm +0100 17/10/00, Ben Hatchelt wrote:

There's a choral sample on a track from analogue bubblebath (not sure which one), or perhaps it's an AFX track off artificial intelligence, either way, it's an extended AAAAAHHHHHH that rises and falls with the scale of the track.... it's a fucking great sample. cdin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

These are two of my favorite samples, but I've never figured out where they came from: 1. AFX's Analogue Bubblebath ep, "the flowers that bloom in the warmth of the sun are there to be loved by everyone". Great sample, seemed utterly nostalgic first time I heard it and every time after, but can't for the life of me figure out where it's from. Anyone know? 2. Also, the Strictly and PC version of Laughable Butane Bob off of the Blechsdottir comp. It was the first way I'd heard LBB, so I thought that the extended female "let me out! let me out!" sample was just part of the song. It works so perfect, for so long. Never figured out where that one comes from either, but it's not so important to me as the completely nostalgic other one. Actually, just about all their samples on that mix are perfect - I love the ?Marlon Brando? "like a snail crawling on the edge of a straight razor" sample near the end of the mix, as well as the beginning sci fi sample. They really did a superb job of mixing all the Warp stuff, I'm constantly re-amazed whenever I dig the cd back out again. Thanks for letting me play, clue me in if you know where the AB sample is from- Ryan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've been told that sample comes from an old Robert Mitchum vehicle called "The Night Of The Hunter", but I haven't been able to confirm that. I doubt it, but I have it on tape somewhere, I'll dig it up and see. What a great movie though. My favorite sample was from "Beyond the valley of the dolls"...from a roni size track that goes "What I see is beyond your dreaming". It is spoken but a nude woman painted black with a chain around her neck, French too, I think. the sample on "isopropanol" comes from "The Sound Of Music", another track from that Aphex period has a similar sample by the same actress........ does anyone no of the advert/source of "Are you one of those girls for whom time stands still once a month?" sample on "Tamphex (Tamphuq Mix)"? The sample on Common's "Sixth Sense" from, i think, a Parliament track is the "Best Sample I've Ever Heard?!" for what its worth. scott x -----Original Message----- From: Drusca [mailto:andrei@world.std.com] Sent: 18 October 2000 18:04 To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Re : [idm] Best sample you've ever heard?! i don't know, but it sounds an awful lot like beck... perhaps he sampled himself during production and found the sample as funny as you (and i!) do. i know i've heard other people sample it, too, and i've gone like "hey that's beck!". i like the barely heard sample in autechre's "recury" that goes "i'll be alright". it fits in quite well with the "disintegrating nature" or whatever of said track. or maybe the "bollocks" sample in boc's "pete standing alone". nah, i like the ae sample more. cheers, /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Not at all helpful comment, but I've also always thought it's Beck himself. Yes. Especially the samples off of Big Soup. What about Jack Dangers(Meat Beat Manifesto)? I believe Storm the Studio, 99%, and Satyricon influenced many of the acts today, with there obscure/sometimes quite funny samples. Has anyone heard any of the Tino's Breaks albums? Jack uses some very effective/humorous samples throughout. I have to agree with the above paragraph. A strange coincidence... it so happens that I put on this record today, before reading this post. I now remember why I very rarely play it. I have to disagree with the below paragraphs: That CD is fantastic and really engaging paying you back with listening pleasure for every track you hear. I love them all and cannot listen to it in parts - only entire CD. btw it is much better than all Wagon Christs together Alien On 19/10/00 10:04, Ben Hatchelt said in living color:

Yes ! It's excellent. Luke Vibert has many varied styles - D&B for Papa (done under his "Plug" guise) was a moment in time - now passed. Try his much older Throbbing Pouch on Rising High for a more IDMmy touch or '98's Tally Ho! album for some non-serious good time fun or how about his most recent outing collab'ing with BJ Cole on "Stop the Panic". As Luke Vibert he did the excellent Big Soup for Mo'Wax in '97. They're all different and all good in their own way. Of all his output, D&B for Papa is the one I'm most bored by - just too much of the same thing. In isolation the tracks are brilliant, but over 2 CD's they drill holes in my head. Also worth finding are his remixes - some stunning stuff. Sorry - I'm multi-tasking and my brain's not quite in gear. If any of the above doesn't make sense, apoligies all round. Yeah, MBM are definitely one of my faves when it comes to cool samples. Every now and then I'll be watching something and a sample I recognise will pop up, and I'm like, "hey! I know that!". Last time was as part of an artificial intelligence course we were watching a tape which contained that "the mysterious problem of how the brain works" thing!

A better take on the "That was a good drum breeeak!" was done by the Frogs on their 1989 album "It's Only Right and Natural", except they just said it, not sampled it. Of course, they followed that up with the lyrics "I FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE TO ALL THE MEN TONIGHT..... LOTSA JUICY ASSES HANGIN' OUT!"... so make of that what you will. ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= On Thu, 19 Oct 2000, Andrew J. I just resubscribed at 2:30 pm, so pardon me if this was answered in the past two hours - pretty sure that's from the song "i don't care if u disrespect me (just so you love me)" by The Frogs (parodic, politically incorrect song-writer duo from Milwaukee) from their "pro-gay" _It's Only Right and Natural_ LP (late 80s Homestead records). it's not from the dolemite films. but it IS from one of those dirty "for-adults-only" party records that guys like Rudy Ray Moore (Dolemite) used to record. from what i remember the "dick in the mashed potatoes" line was that particular comedian's catchphrase. -willie green ------------ 1642 try 621 ------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You are correct sir, and it's Lavar Burton asking her "what were the clouds like when you were young?" -- he's the black guy with the dope shades on Star Trek TNG. That's a very interesting track from the standpoint that there's basically NO keyboards or actual instruments on it -- the famous guitar figure is from a Steve Reich piece "Electric Counterpoint" -- Reich sued the Orb and won over that one. And the harmonica is bit from somewhere -- I forget where but I've heard it on other records. I don't know how Rickie Lee felt about the track, but I imagine she is a good enough sport to enjoy it for what it is -- they actually credit her in the liner notes for OrbLive. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the harmonica bit is from the theme to ... um ... some Clint Eastwood joint from the 60's ... dammit. Either "A Fistfull of Dollars" "The Magnificent Seven" or "For a Few Dollars More" ...
