Hello. Anyone else out there had any disc rot problems with Chain Reaction titles? I just whipped out my Vladislav Delay "Multila" and Monolake "Hong Kong" to find patches of discolouring on the surface of the discs. It doesn't appear to have affected play, but those patches definitely weren't there last time I looked at them earlier this year. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This has become a nice legend: Chain Reaction CDs made decaying on purpose. (Heh, then my CD-R copies will outlive them)

My monolake's fine, thank goodness... but mind those horrid boxes!! Be warned : repack in plastic jewel cases for safekeeping to avoid cracks. It's been said before, but bears repeating. I don't think the CR/BC/M packaging is that big of a deal. I've owned a bunch of those CDs for years and I haven't had/seen any problems. You just have to be careful, like when you're pulling them out of the case, otherwise I don't see how the cases can be damaging to the CDs. I do have a friend whose Porter Ricks CD basically broke in 2 though. I think that happened from pulling on the sides of the CD too forcefully while the middle section wouldn't come loose from the case. Andrei On Wed, 27 Sep 2000, Irene McC wrote:

You've been exceptionally lucky. However cool those cases may look, their design is shear idiocy: relying of the flexibility of the CD to hold it to an inflexible metal post puts an enormous amount of stress on it. The disc-distroying properties of these cases has been reported here on many occasions, and I've personally had two discs irretrievably damaged by storage in these cases. The center post in these cases varies a bit in size -- I've seen some where the disk just slips off, and others where the fit was so tight that the disk arrived with a major crack. Jewel cases are cheap, while some of the CR disks are nearly impossible to find these days. I've moved all my CR CD's to the latter... -Ed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

By a happy coincidence, just as all this CR CD talk is going on, the weirdo computer-chain-store-turned-CD-shop across from my work got practically the entire CR catalog in except for the two compilation disks, which I have already. I know this has been talked about before, but anyone have any recs. before I start diving in? My favorite tracks are 1 on the BC comp and the last porter ricks track on Compiled. How is Multila? I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them, but if I had to recommend any, I'd say check out the Monolake. I'm also a huge fan of the Vainqueur, but that record's very minimal and droning -- many songs dismiss the need for beats. The Matrix and Fluxion records have a nice assortment of tracks. I still think the earlier artists on the label -- monolake, vainqueur, substance, porter ricks, various artists -- tended to make the more experimental/uncanny sounds. After that you get the Vladislave Delay-style stuff -- more clicky and beat-driven. The Hallucinator stuff has some great moments and also some lackluster tracks; I'd check that one out too. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You shouldn't live without the Various Artists and Porter Ricks CDs. Amazing sound design on both of those. Very rich, textured and womb-like sound. Personally I found the Vainqueur to be one of the less interesting ones. Kinda dry. And out of the more recent batch (CRD 07-11) I think only the Delay is really worth spending some time with, but I haven't heard the new Fluxion. Two other closely related things which I'd highly recommend are the Rhythm & Sound w/ Tikiman "Showcase" cd on Burial Mix for some really blunted dub-house with & without ragga vocals and the Basic Channel comp which has some amazing tracks from the BC catalogue on it plus a few tracks only available on the CD. The Maurizio comp on M/Maurizio is also very nice, but more housey you could say. Andrei On Fri, 29 Sep 2000, Jason Birchmeier wrote:
