Again, the concept that Bjork might actually be a interesting musician in her own right seems to escape some people, as if there must be some reason to work with her besides the fact that she's a great artist (I still think it's unconscious sexism). Regardless of who she works with, her music has a distinct and unique sound (when she writes songs for other singers you can hear it immediately - how many musicians can you identify simply by the sound of a melody? Prince comes to mind ...) that clearly is her own and not her collaborators'. In many cases her collaborators have done their very best work with her, with most of their non-Bjork work not quite measuring up (IMHO). Anyway, a friend of mine saw her last week on an Amtrak train in upstate New York, working with some music software on her laptop. My friend is familiar with sequencers and most commercial music software, but he said that the software she was running was unfamiliar to him. - Cf --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i think there is alot to be said for working with other artists. everytime we collaborate with other musicians, especially ones with a background of more "traditional" (i.e. rock/folk/country etc.) music we come away from the experience with much more than we would from a normal "putzing around in the studio alone" session. bjork has several things going for her in terms of collaboration: 1) she is very imaginitive and experimental ... much more likely to allow an electronic artist do something off-the-wall than, say, Madonna -- who gets accolades for working with a played out muzak-techno producer like William Orbit and basically just restates electro/house instead of doing something really creative. 2) her songs are great .. both lyrically and musically 3) to be business minded, she has a huge audience and immediate name recognition which will bring exposure to any artist who works with her... do you think Mark Bell would be producing Depeche Mode's next album if he hadn't run the boards on "Homogenic"? well ... maybe, they did get Tim Simenon for their last one I guess... -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

umm, not to be nit-picky...and not that i actually enjoy madonna's music, but didn't she get Funkstorung on her latest album? or am i pulling this out of my ass? though, even if Madonna did work with Funkstorung on this occasion, Bjork is, still, '_much more likely_ to allow an electronic artist do something off the wall'... but don't count Madonna out, is all i'm saying. semblance (Jesus cured lepers, you often not. <!--Sorry to semblance, I meant to send this to everyone...--> There's no contest. Here's a story. It is true. I have this musician friend who lives in New York, he was in a great math-rock band called The Cranium. They split up and he did some various projects, one of which led him to meet Bjork. She heard some of the music, liked it and offered to fly him out to Europe to record some stuff for her. Yup, flew him to Eurpoe, just like that. I don't know her personally, but by all accounts Bjork records tons of music from an extremely diverse range of musicians, then adapts it into her style. She is extremely nice and good hearted, which is how she can get away with this. For some reason I don't think Madonna would even consider something this adventurous. -Lee on 9/26/00 11:23 AM, semblance at semblance@netzero.net wrote:

Y'all can go on about this in your usual style for a while, but here's the essential question: If you saw Bjork with a laptop on a bench with headphones on wouldn't you want to know what she was hearing? I'm hot and cold with her material. I've only got one of her albums. I bought it for $2 on cassette at the drugstore checkout line. But you can't deny that she's one of those people who are rotated 90 degrees in the complex plane from the rest of humanity. And I always want to know what THEY are doing. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Amen to that. I remember when I praised Björk as a musician on this list when she released the Homogenic album and I got responses like: "Maybe your bitch Bjork can use some of her gazillion dollars and buy herself some testes, maybe then she'll do it herself:)" /franz At 10:59 2000-09-26 -0400, Chris Fahey wrote:
