So I picked up an MPC2000XL (I got the studio+ so I have the effects, I/O and SMPTE boards in it, as well as 32MB of RAM) last week and I have had a hell of a time making anything decent with it... I know there are a lot of people that use it as the center of their studio (u-Ziq comes to mind) so I'm wondering if anybody out there has one and has some tips on how to make it not suck. I can't believe you can't change effects/filters while a sample is playing, or resample something through the effects for example... I really can't see why people would think an MPC is any better than even FastTracker (same sound quality but Fast Tracker is cheaper and can change the pitch or volume of something while it's playing, for example). I'm really tempted to return this and either go back to my computer or get a high end Emu (the E4XT Ultra is calling my name). -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@curiousnetworks.com http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i have an MPC2000 (not the XL) which is pretty much the same. the sequencer and the live flexibility it gives you is about the long and the short of it as far as benefits go. the sampler isn't worth snot really. i still use it but generally run the sounds through an external analogue filter just to get some extra punch to it. for the most part i use it for a live sequencer to drive my Emu and synths. an E4XT would definitely stomp a mudhole in the MPC's sample engine, i don't know about the E4's sequencer, though i do believe it has one... if you want a GOOD MPC, scrape up the cash and pick up the MPC-3000 (which is actually what µ-ziq uses) because it had a great sampler and a better sequencer. It also costs $3500 new and usually $2000 used. my partner nate has one and it sounds top notch. josh -- String Theory Electroacoustic Concern http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/

Hmm... When I looked at the site, it appeared that the 2000XL had some advantages over the 3000 (the sequencer could hold 300,000 notes versus the 75,000 of the 3000, etc) but maybe I'll have to return the 2000 and pick up a 3000... -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@curiousnetworks.com http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well, with sequencers, bigger isn't always better.... the 3000 may not hold as many notes as the 2000 (or as much sample RAM either) but what it DOES with the notes is better IMHO. on 8/25/00 11:05 AM, atomly at atomly@atomly.com wrote:

i've had one of these on the brain for a while, though I haven't bought one. mostly for live use but also for when I just couldn't look at my computer for a while...sure, I guess they do have limitations but the sequencer (from what I've read) is killer once you get your brain around it. Tons of people swear by them so there must be something to them...just check the reviews at conicstate or harmony central..interesting links with lots more info...good luck though. ----------
