ummm... my computer. if i had a powerbook, i would say my powerbook. i kept my R5 (drum machine) for the hell of it, but my favorite 'instruments' are: SuperCollider (the absolute best piece of software created... and yes i'm a registered owner) Reaktor (heavy on the CPU, but good for creating loops to be processed. probably works best if you have one machine dedicated to this. the 100 Mb enigma file is retarded. i suppose this is a good copy protection method, but if the key file is larger than the program, that simply doesn't make sense. of course there's ways around this...) Max / MSP / pluggo (i haven't created any MSP patches of my own yet, but pluggo is a blast. SuperCollider is a much better program though) Digital Performer (thinking about switching to CubaseVST) MetaSynth (yeah, everyone is using this. it's hard to get anything original out of it at this point in time) Spark Peak (with SFX machine) i'm hoping to get PD running once i instal OS X DP4. or maybe i'll just install linuxPPC. (PD is free btw) and no, i can't make copies of any of this stuff for anyone. sorry. VocalWriter is pretty cool as well. i used to own a bunch of synths, but sold them for a computer and software. buy a mac. maybe one keyboard controller if you're inclined to using keys. (i will debate the issue of whether or not the mouse is a musical interface. i sure as hell think it is...) no need for MIDI. with OSC you can send more information, much faster. take lots of math learn c++ make lots of friends cheers, christian --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have to respectfully disagree with the above. You can certainly spot obvious metasynth use on a number of IDM releases, including say Lilley of the Valley, but the potential of the app to deliver very different sounds that do not sound, for lack of a better phrase, 'all sparkly' is certainly there. I think a big part of this is a lot of people for whatever reason use the built in waveforms or variations thereof which all have a very similar and identifiable sound... my .02 nate --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

let me restate. i said it was hard, not impossible to get original sounds out of MetaSynth. it's definitely a very powerful program, although the lack of realtime synthesis is it's primary downfall. (which isn't the fault of the software, simply the limitations of current hardware. although the whole DP G4 might change things when programmers utilize this configuration in OS X) MetaTrack is pretty cool as well. (sequencer - like program for MetaSynth) cheers, christian -- http://www.thislinkgoesnowhere.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i have only used the demo and was quite impressed. saying that you can't get something original out of it is ridiculous...that's like saying you can't get something original out of a modular synth...sure...some stuff is recognizeable vut that doesn't mean you are forced to do the same... steve ----------
