Here's I think what is an interesting question: Do you actually go out and dance? How does you exposure and enjoyment of more mainstream dance music inform your feelings about electronic listening music? This came to mind on my drive home from Detroit monday. I personally love going to clubs and hearing good DJs, whether it's techno, house, hiphop, IDM, funk, or lounge music. Since I started DJing I've zoomed in on all the vinyl I have from Aphex Twin, Black Dog, Cylob, etc on the tracks that actually work on the dance floor. I had the privelege of hearing Carlos Souffront spin a lot of classic tracks from the likes of Black Dog and Kirk Digiorgio saturday night, and the stuff really can work for dancing. Plus, if you never hear these records on a big system you're missing out bigtime. So what do you think? kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yes I do. If it's stellar dance music (especially funk or really groovy house), I'm out there regardless. If it's somewhere between great and pretty good, I'm out there after a beer or two. Anything worse than that, I wouldn't move if you pushed me. When it comes down to it, dancing is simply your physical response to the music, so better music usually means a greater response. I always get a little depressed when I go to an electronic show expecting an active crowd but find they're all just standing around. Obviously, music doesn't move everybody (and it'd be practically impossible to do much more than nod your head blissfully at an Oval show or something similar), but so many genres of music -- granted, not all -- have headed downhill after progressing from "dance" music to "head" music. IMHO, the longer we can keep the "D" a vital part of IDM, the better this stuff will get.

I'm sure it does, but I don't quite know how. I'm a big believer in different music for different moods -- bubblegum was *made* for sunny days just as Bob Dylan was *made* for long road trips just as early Warp was *made* for late-night comedowns -- and part of that is accepting that certain types of music do different things very well... On the dancefloor, I'd be bored by a lot of stuff that fascinates me while I have the headphones on at work, because I'm judging them as much on circumstances as anything.

Yeah, I really like dancing to good dance music, but I completely *love* dancing to IDM that gives you the complete mind/body workout. Mentioning Carlos makes me think of DEMF, where he dropped bits of Mask 400 in one of his sets, a perfect example of this -- I *love* finally hearing a record on a big system that I've dug on the hi-fi...

Yep, that's a *huge* part of it too... ;> .John. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've said it before and I'll say it again (x 2), I don't dance. Never have, never will. However, I love going out and hearing a great DJ spin some classy and unexpected shit. But my enjoyment isn't any less valid than people who like to dance. Perhaps I'm a good example of the alpha-idm listener - I'm more content to listen, nothing has ever moved me to, well, move, so I don't. I can recognise a dance floor friendly track though, which I suppose is something. But that may be coz I hear obvious 4/4 and decide it must be a floor filler. -i. np - Plaid : Trainer (wicked!) I've been known to shake my tail to just about anything, except that the simple versions of house, two-step, and speed garage leave me fairly cold, so I have to work at it in Portland. Ever since sidling into a desk job, though, it's a much needed work-out/shakedown. What I'd love to see, and won't, are some of the more complex rhythms you're occasionally allowed to play in Germany, NYC, or other larger dance cultures where there's a little more segmentation. Unfortunately, the DJs probably rightly don't trust that many in the crowd are willing and able to jump around to Warp-style breaks or no-beat funk---or, hell, Freddy Fresh-ish stylings would have me pounding the floorboards---so I'm often left jumping around at private functions or in the relative sanctity of my apartment.
