This question relates to making computer music, I hope someone can help.... What problems/issues should one be aware of before purchasing a laptop(pc or mac) that may possibly be used for computer music applications. I'm mainly concerned with importing/exporting digital audio and connecting with MIDI. Can internal laptop soundcards (or whatever is inside 'em) create issues when connecting an external soundcard? Do PCMCIA sound cards generally suck? etc, etc Any info would be appreciated. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! There are a number of limitations with laptops -- notably the onboard sound on a lot of them is fairly horrible. They're also fragile, expensive, difficult to repair, and not very open to expansion. There is one well-reviewed PCMCIA sound card, the wamibox, which costs $399 -- info at http://www.egosys.net Keep in mind too that if you don't need total portability, you can build a computer with a micro-atx motherboard, nice big hard drive, and a flat panel display for about what you'd pay for a much less capable laptop. It would all fit in a decent sized suitcase and set up very quickly... kent williams -- kent@avalon.net On Fri, 7 Jul 2000, Kallan Mrozek wrote:

My recommendations (and what I did): Get a laptop with a good warranty and then buy a PCMCIA soundcard- I got the Digigram VXpocket Pro (http://www.digigram.com) -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@cyrus.net http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
