I've been thinking about starting a net-only label, and I'm curious how many of you who bother ordering stuff on the net vs how many just buy what you can find in your local stores? I'd be grateful for any thoughts people may have on this, thanks, . christian . http://home.sol.no/~ig-88 . icq: 28441442 . --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

what i can't find in my local record stores, i order on the net... the thing is i will always go for the local record store first 1) because i want the new XXXXX record NOW!! 2) if i haven't heard it before i can listen at the store and 'try before you buy' (which i guess can also be done online, but it's not the same... 3) i just like digging thru crates but i do order a lot of stuff online anyway just because it's easier to pick up stuff that isn't very current online rather than ordering it thru the local shoppes. jopsh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Tue, 23 May 2000, Christian Vestb? wrote:

I try to buy music frequently from good stores local to me. I don't really do the mailorder thing too much anymore, unless there's something which I just can't special order from any of the places around Boston, for these reasons: 1) No shipping costs. 2) Cheap used music at the better places. (5-8$/release instead of $10-15+) 3) You can actually give the stuff a spin before you buy. I would be rather upset if my local stores went away, so I try to make an effort to support them. I end up going to them almost once a week sometimes, vs. the once-a-month habit I had going with mailorder. BTW I'm assuming by "net-only" label you mean that you you accept orders online only, not that you publish only net-based releases (mp3's/files online). It's me the dastardly not too mention vocal label owner again... ;) Seriously though net sales for my label account for less than 5% of the total sales. With another 5% being done at gigs, and by myself locally. So that leaves 90% of AI sales being done through distributors and stores. A lot of people email me and ask where can they get our stuff in there local region and for North America we have that pretty well covered. In Europe and the UK decidedly less so (just Mego's excellent MDOS online service at www.mdos.at, email them that you want Thug's "Isolated Rhythm Chock" as they are taking more as we speak and Hedonizm Records in the UK which only has 4 left, so you better hurry!!). Anyhow a lot of people when I tell them it can be ordered direct from the label.. just can't be bothered with having to get an IMO or cash and post it off and wait a few weeks for it to arrive and then another few weeks for me to send their goods. ..And probably rightly so when they can buy music maybe as good by just walking into their local store or ordering from the myriad of online stores that take credit cards, etc. I'm in the process of looking for and setting up credit card facilities for the AI web-site shop (this come at a price and is an expensive overhead). Hopefully this may alleviate some of the problems that cause people not to order directly and pay it's own way. Just some rough mutterings on my situation. In synopsis I find people would rather go to their local store or order from their favourite online retailer mainly for the convenience. Nothing wrong with that and to tell you the truth i'd rather deal with stores and distributors who take a good number of cd's than all the individual orders as they are time consuming and don't amount too much in terms of sales volume and thus money returned. I've experienced this too, especially with the larger icky stores, and the local shops generally sell jazz, blues, punk, etc. but not a whole lot in the way of IDM... Fortunately, there is a shop just north of me that does sell some pretty good stuff occasionally - I just found used copies of the Warp 10+2 Classics 2CD set, so that was pretty cool (and unexpected)... For me, I like the convenience of using a net store, so I don't have to go through the hassle of making a special trip to San Francisco to do record shopping (I used to do this quite a bit in my younger years, but hardly ever now). I can get whatever I want delivered directly to my place of employment. I *really* like this, since my schedule doesn't have a lot of breathing room. Plus I do most of my listening at work anyway, so it works out just fine. :) :: e v a n k. s t o n e :: w e b p r o g r a m m i n g e n g i n e e r :: m u l t i m e d i a l i v e :: p e t a l u m a, c a, u s a ------------------------------ :: mailto:evan@mmlive.com :: http://www.mmlive.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
