thanks for reminding me of this! i remember giving this a positive review on urban sounds when it came out, but my ears will probably have grown fonder still of this in the meanwhile. (see recent post.) lots of not-quite-music going on here! listening again, i think the shirt trax, er, track is probably the best one on here. surprising, given how little i like snd. i think i need to get their or cd. (hopefully no boom-boom.) sc

i finally got a copy of the shirt trax cd "good news about space" today. (shirt trax is a side project by one of the members of snd.) i haven't fully digested it yet, but i'd recommend "good news" to those who thought snd sounded like a good idea on paper, but found it too structured and genre-rooted in practice. "good news" is actually a fair distance from snd, but an obviously digital experimentalism joins the two projects. i'd make the comparison of farmers manual or takemura (minus, for the most part, the playfulness), primarily due to the ease with which it seems to balance academic and post-techno syntax. lots of skipping edit points, but also a strong sense of motion and development. there's also a good deal of variety, which few rigorously digital-oriented producers seem to be concerned with these days. sc --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Just thought I should drop in and say some lines about Shirt Trax. Specifically I just wanted to say that most of this album is pretty tangential (at best) to IDM. I had to get that out, cos I was very taken aback by what it was like from what people had said on the list, specifically in that I expected more than a couple of tracks to have some rhythm, and definitely more to have tuned elements in them. Many tracks are _exactly_ the kind of thing I can pull out of a piece of wave editing software given an hour or two (and I'm not pretending I'm clever for being able to do that). I was surprised to hear SND needed some custom software to pull out the sounds they do, as their stuff would be easy to make with many existing packages. Anyway, I'm not stumbling into the "anyone can do it, so it sucks" fallacy (I love my Mark Rothko :-) I only wanted to make sure anyone who was interested in getting this album knew something more of what they were getting themselves in for. Specifically, something far more unstable and unapproachable than, say, Oval or Microstoria. surprisingly, what i remember reading regarding shirt trax is that their intent was to make music that anybody could do with the most common software, just as you pointed out. from what i understand, the trick with this sort of music is not so much to be 'good' at making it but rather to be able to sort out the worthwhile stuff from the noodly jams. in that sense, shirt trax succeeds because they create an atmosphere out of the simplest tonal arrangements you can think of. so it's really more of a matter of a certain music speaking your language than it being good or 'hard to do' (although that can be appreciated too, but differently). but, yeah, it's way abstract & there's not too many beats. it's also not the sort of minimalism people are used to (i.e. not the dubby minimal house that some people simply refer to as 'minimal' nowadays). but the arrangement of tones works, the same way your rothko paintings work even if they're just two colors assembled together. ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
