surprisingly, what i remember reading regarding shirt trax is that their intent was to make music that anybody could do with the most common software, just as you pointed out. from what i understand, the trick with this sort of music is not so much to be 'good' at making it but rather to be able to sort out the worthwhile stuff from the noodly jams. in that sense, shirt trax succeeds because they create an atmosphere out of the simplest tonal arrangements you can think of. so it's really more of a matter of a certain music speaking your language than it being good or 'hard to do' (although that can be appreciated too, but differently). but, yeah, it's way abstract & there's not too many beats. it's also not the sort of minimalism people are used to (i.e. not the dubby minimal house that some people simply refer to as 'minimal' nowadays). but the arrangement of tones works, the same way your rothko paintings work even if they're just two colors assembled together. ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
