Just listening to this now, and it's as good as I expected. Trods on the same skittery-beat path as his earlier releases like the Midwest EP, but tempered with a bit of the dark ambience he explored on Healing. Mandell hasn't disappointed me yet. Yep yep yep...this is an excellent release (music and packaging). Carpark did this one some justice. As Greg states, the jarring percussion you'd expect is there, but melodic invention is foregrounded this time. I get the sense Jake's music may soon eclipse the work of more revered artists oft praised on this list; it's obvious to my ear that his knowledge of jazz composition is starting to set him apart as one of the musicians in the genre...as opposed to the sound tinkerers. In making that distinction, I'll posit that one isn't "better" than the other, just different. Topping that off with the Various Artists 8.8.5.9.Remixes makes yesterday a banner day for the Postal industry. laz Greg Clow wrote:

Excuse me ? Knowledge of jazz composition ? As someone who has actually studied jazz composition and listened to jazz for many years I have to say I don't hear any jazz in Mandell's writing, only some inconsequential, directionless melodic noodling placed on top of another one of his percussive experiments. While I enjoy the "Placekick" EP quite a lot, that is due to his impressive programming skills (and sound design to a lesser extent) which seem to be getting better by the minute. I definitely think his melodic writing is his weakness. It's fortunate he didn't have much recorded at that time, or I would have gone out and bought all of it. By the fourth listen the effect of his rhythm programming wore off, and the amateurism of his trite melodies and aimless harmonic progressions started to grate on me--BAD. I just can't listen to Parallel Processes any more, and though the Placekick EP shows some improvement (and the same rhythmic inventiveness as before), it's already starting to wear thin. Simple, repetitive melodies and harmonies can be extremely effective (e.g. Ae's Amber). Perhaps Jake is just trying too hard to be "musical." His sonic talents appear to lie outside of traditional melodic/harmonic axes, in any case. There is much interesting music to be made that rejects these elements in any case... -Ed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

funny, it took me a really long time to get into parallel processes, but now i totally dig it. everyone seems to agree that the rhythm programming is great, but the melodies don't bother me at all, really. speaking of worminterface, just picked up colony laspberry by baraki. what a disc! worminterface really seem to be putting lots of good stuff out. can't wait for the new plod. still no release date on the site, though. alan!
