please dont post topics for debate on this list unless they are directly related to the music discussed on this list. we have far too much off topic banter on this list as is. controversial debates are the last thing this list needs. Just listening to this now, and it's as good as I expected. Trods on the same skittery-beat path as his earlier releases like the Midwest EP, but tempered with a bit of the dark ambience he explored on Healing. Mandell hasn't disappointed me yet. Yep yep yep...this is an excellent release (music and packaging). Carpark did this one some justice. As Greg states, the jarring percussion you'd expect is there, but melodic invention is foregrounded this time. I get the sense Jake's music may soon eclipse the work of more revered artists oft praised on this list; it's obvious to my ear that his knowledge of jazz composition is starting to set him apart as one of the musicians in the genre...as opposed to the sound tinkerers. In making that distinction, I'll posit that one isn't "better" than the other, just different. Topping that off with the Various Artists 8.8.5.9.Remixes makes yesterday a banner day for the Postal industry. laz Greg Clow wrote:

I've been pretty unimpressed with most of what people have been hyping lately. However...I picked up Thug's "Isolated Rhythm Clock", and I have to heap praise on along with everybody else: what a great record! Beautiful. That, along with stuff like Drexciya and Dettinger, is looking like a top ten CD of the year. I agree about Thug's cd. It is quite good. I have been remiss in not saying more about it. Regarding your comments about the records below getting old pretty fast to your ears, how many of the records below have you actually heard? Most of these just came out and many of them are simply amazing - especially Phonem's the mechanic verses 2xlp. I just can see how you can dismiss many of the records below so quickly. . I got the Sendertechnik and Phonem 12"s some time ago, and while on the first listen or two they sounded quite good, after more than that they just sounded like fairly run of the mill electronic twiddling, and they certainly aren't as good as Thug, SND, Dettinger, Funckarma, Japanese Telecom, I-F, Drexciya, not to mention old stuff like B12, Black Dog, Stasis, Basic Channel, Carl Craig, Rhythim Is Rhythim, etc. So they don't get as much play and they don't hold my interest as long. I've heard everything on your list except: . Burnt Friedman & the Nu Dub Players: do not legalize it! 12" (~Scape) * . Jake Mandell: the placekick cdep (Carpark) . I will agree that the Morr Music Phonem 12" is not as great as his Jetlag 2x12" will be my #1 release of '99 and I still think the Morr Music 12" is quite good. The Sendertechnik LP is the first release I've been able to find from ADSR so to me it's great. If the other ADSR releases are better then i must really be missing out. Regarding staying power, there's not much out these days that DOES hold up to the old stuff. : )

Well the new Burnt Friedmann on scape doesnt really sound like pole or kit clayton. Instead it has a nice new-school dub-raggae flavor very much in the flavor of the old Incoming! label output. So you might want to give that one a try. The mandell ep is somewhat similar to his previous works so if you didnt like those you're right to avoid this one. The Kid 606 cd is a remix package and hardly sound like K606 at all. Instead it sounds like the remixers involved which include Solvent, Hrvatski, Lexaunculpt, Matmos, Electric Company, Marumari, to name just a few. And the Lithops 7" is sublime but i am a sucker for anything the Lithops/MoM crew produce. I believe it's acutally a limited repress of the 7" that came out several years ago so if you do want it dont hesitate. The Solovyev LP is an excellent mix of cologne-profan- kompakt styled techno & electronica. It's right up there with the Nothingface cd & the Braunmusik/Honda Beats LPs on Tropen Verlang. The new Chessie cd features deep droning guitar scapes over subtle, often experimental electronica falling somewhere inbetween third eye foundation, my bloody valentine, and remote viewer. Finally, Scanner's Mort Aux Vaches cd is a great ep of spacious ambient electronica peppered with Scanner's signature hijacked conversations and even some female poetry over the top. It's definitely one of my favorite scanner releases. Ok there are a few descriptions.
