saw kid koala/amon tobin friday night at the fox in boulder, co. just wanted to emphasize: if you have any interest in watching a smiling, immensely likable young man tear shit up on four turntables, you should probably try to see this. KK dropped several tricks i hadn't seen before (an amazing scrambled trumpet solo comes to mind), and just generally entertained the hell out of me. some might be interested to hear about one particular highlight: he (and a talented sidekick, "p love") recreate the entirety of scratchcratchratchatch live on stage. it was jaw-droppingly... yeah. amon tobin was good too, if you're into that sort of evil-yet-funky dnb thing. i'm not familiar with his stuff, and i didn't stick around long enough to say more about it. more posts about drugs please, they're about the only thing i find interesting on this list anymore. and if you don't like a particular subject, for god's sake, don't respond to it. *poof* 99% on-topic idm-list. take it easy, nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Im not sure if this can be reiterated enough. I drove 300 miles to see this boulder show, slept and drove 300 miles back to go to work the next day, and would do it every weekend if i had the opportunity. As stated by nub, he blessed us with some classic kid koala style music, but has not quit with his inovatious style with some new sounds far better experienced than described. check www.kidkoala.com for tourdates, this is not one to miss On Sun, 14 May 2000, Nub wrote:

ooh, i have a question i forgot to ask. one of the things that amazed me most about the show was that nobody used headphones. kid koala would grab for his vinyl, throw it down, and then take about half a second to drop the needle exactly where he wanted it. HOW DOES HE KNOW WHERE TO DROP THE NEEDLE?!?! is it marked with some special dj tape or something? i'm totally at a loss - i can't imagine he can find the exact groove he wants in an almost negligible amount of time. or does he just drop it wherever and improvise with whatever comes up? but that wouldn't really make sense either, i don't think, if he's recreating specific tracks. somebody help. -nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

if the record is just breaks you can just drop the needle and go, but i know some djs who have used the same record enough that they can just drop the needle instinctively on the exact spot they want it... if you look at a record up close you can actually see the character of the sound ... like a quiet bassy part will look shinier than a part with a bunch of beats and horns maybe he was just lip synching though... josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 15 May 2000, Nub wrote:

Yes and no. It is probably not special DJ tape but it is tape. One can purchase non marking tape at any large hardware store. Althoug as DJ skills get more and more popular, I imagine some music company like Vestax will try and market 'special DJ approved tape!' i saw Kid Koala play last night and there were times where it was obvoius that he knew the records so well he probably didn't even need tape. There were times where he would mouth the lyrics and speech as the were playing on the record. There were also times when he would actually have to look at the grooves in the record. The turntables are an instrument, and like any other musical instrument, there are different methods of performance. I guess putting tape on a record is a lot like a beginner putting dots on the neck of a violin as to find the notes better. -Lee On Mon, 15 May 2000, Nub wrote:

I saw the show last night in San Diego... I'm not familiar with his music... but I found the whole show to be very entertaining. He comes across as a very nice guy. The band, Bulfrog, that backed him up was great to - they wern't amazing musicians, but they all played together very well - and the integration of the tables w/ the band worked very well. I think you should all check this show out if it is playing anywhere near you. You'll hear a wide variety of music and beats - and see some amazing things with the turntables. I, have never seen anything like his skills... My girlfriend wasn't having a good time, so I unfortunately had to leave a little after Amon started up. :( I only heard about 8 minutes... f*@k!!! I gave a bunch of my music to the band, I was there before the show helping out - a friend is the promoter that put on the show. SO... they are hopefully listening to some Sonic Wallpaper right now :) Before Koala took the stage, one of my new tracks was played and used for a modern dance piece with about 10 dancers - which was very cool. Also before Koala, a local artist called Irwin's Conspiracy performed his flavor of DnB grooves - he plays a midi drum kit with a sampler, Echoplex and a Theramin - and he produces some great sounds - watching him play is great - he freaks out on his drum kit and at the same time is going off on his Theramin - waving his arms about. :) Sonic Wallpaper _______________________ http://www.sonicwallpaper.com | http://www.mp3.com/sonicwallpaper http://www.mp3.com/junglewarfare | http://www.mp3.com/remixes http://www.mp3.com/projectcathedral | http://www.mp3.com/live --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
