This is one of the best things I've heard so far this year (along with Savath + Savalas's "Folk Songs For Trains, Trees, and Honey"). I've listened to it at least 10 times already in the last 4 days. His first full length kinda left me cold, a bit too "good old daze of IDM" for my tastes perhaps, but this new one's a different story. There's a pretty overt BOC influence on some tracks (especially 3 & most of all 4) - simple, pensive, mostly minor key progressions/melodies, slow, slightly treated, looping breaks and an overall compositional simplicity - and at times it kinda sounds like an IDM take on "Hex" era Bark Psychosis, but the use of harpsichord gives it a distinct sound. I think the Forced Exposure review puts it nicely, even if they might mean it sarcastically (you never know with them): "Emits "future classic" status within seconds of play..." Apropos to the Autechre-clones thread that's been going on this week, I think this album's a pretty good example of an artist at times overtly displaying his influences, but somehow also transcending those inflences. Like I can listen to the album and hear what sounds to me like obvious BOC influences, but at the same time I don't regard it as a BOC clone because he put his own spin on things with the use of guitar and harpsichord, etc.. Agree with the others who have commented favorably on this. I've listened to a lot of music over the past few years and this ranks among the top. With so much hype about glitch and Ae-ish (later) style sounds, it's nice to fall back into something a bit more lush and hypnotic. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I just picked this up yesterday. I can't say the first harpsichord track does much for me, but the rest is quite.. "nice". A definite oasis in the releases of 2000 so far: 100% DSP-wank-less. Sort of a distant cousin of BOC, but in so many ways very removed. The beats are live drumming, the melodies are acoustic instruments with glassy hints of synthesizer. I heard the drums described as "hip-hop".. well, IMO, not really.. as "hip-hop" as, say, the drums of Mick Harris (in Scorn guise) are. Not Blackaliscious-hiphop. Also picked up the O.S.T. release on Emanate. Jury is still out on this one. It initially rubbed me the wrong way, but I picked it up due to the fact that it's O.S.T. and Emanate, two names which have rarely left me unsatisfied. (Maybe a grower??) Paradina's latest output on planet-u is pretty catchy as well. Awfully reminiscent of "brace yourself" era u-ziq. I caught a few samples from that age being used (that yell from "Mr. Angry" for one), so I would speculate that these are the leftovers from that time period. A few tracks are totally naff but a few are really gems. Sorry for the rambling. I'll do my best: He's definitely staying away from using outright 4/4 beats, in a very Phthalto way. (no surprise) There are a lot of cut-and-paste feel to this release, sparse chunks of coherent beats with otherworldly pads with none of the sparkly IDM-feel present on "emanated". It's a pretty dark-feeling release, more Phthalto than Emanate. I just wish the tracks were longer, it seems like they top out at 3 minutes or so. I don't hear any live drumming. It all sounds like sampled drum loops and/or breaks to me.

The only accoustic instrument he uses is the harpsichord (on half of the tracks) and I'm suspicious if that's even an authentic harpsichord sound at times. All the guitar stuff is electric guitar and pretty processed at that. Sorry, don't mean to sound snooty, just making some comments. This disc hasn't left my player since getting it earlier in the week. Very chilled and laid back - the album title is perfect. The use of harpsichord gives a number of the tracks a nice feel. BoC is more of a reference point, but it's much more than that - it has its own vibe. Another bonus is the tracks don't go on forever; they're just as long as they should be, without wearing out their welcome.
