Various: Remixes (Warp 10+3) I'm just gonna quit reviewing this new-school Warp stuff. I just don't get it, I suppose. This is one of the most subpar remix compilations I've heard since, well, since they invented remix compilations. Warp could have at least split the 2CD set and arranged the tracks into separate sets- 'this remix CD is Warp tunes remixed by artists not unlike the original Warp breed', and 'this remix CD is Warp tunes covered by superhip ultraplodding post-rock shoegazers'. Of course, even the increased truth-in-advertising my suggested reformatting would confer wouldn't have helped me avoid either record, because some of the pairings sound like they have so much promise! Surgeon does LFO? Richard Devine does Come To Daddy? Boy am I excited! Somehow along the line both remixers above ditched the talents they've shown us in their individual work and laid down instead a pair of throwaway sampler demos. That goes for pretty much everyone else here, too, except the bands with the guitars and such. HINT TO A+R KIDDIES: Just because somebody sounds good when they _are_ remixed does not mean they can remix well themselves (Mogwai). Good example of how massive potential usually just ends in disappointment. Aargh. Coming Soon: Recent records besides the V/Vm comp & Innerzone Orch. that I was actually happy with. ive only listened to this comp once but i thought it was pretty interesting. especially the surgeon remix. i was expecting either some stripped down minimal techno or deranged ambient soundscapes and instead i was surprised to find hes exploring jungle now. (the oval does squarepusher mix was another one that took me by suprise). i cant say i thought every track was great but it was nice to see artists exploring new avenues. sometimes, for me anyway, i need to be in the right environment before i really begin to enjoy certain albums. for instance ill pick something up, listen to it once or twice, and then let it sit for a while. later on, maybe a friend will come by and borrow it, record it to tape, and ill hear it while we are driving around--all of a sudden it sounds great and i wonder why i didnt like it the first time...
