I'm looking to get a MiniDisc recorder to do field recordings/found sound type of things and was wondering which brand to get. Also any recommendations for mics would be appreciated as well. And as far as IDM content goes... I picked up the If.Then.Else cd on Emenate a few weeks ago and I liked it so much that I ran out and bought the other 2 cds offered by the label-- the Emanated comp & the Lilienthal cd! Tasty, melodic IDM with interesting rhytmic pulses. Should be appeal to those with a pallete for 92-94 era IDM/ambient. It's not incredibly 'innovative' but I find myself listening to it more than the AE-esque DSP stuff (as opposed to the real deal). Not that I have anything against DSP sound fuckery but the music on Emanate seems to have some more personality for lack of a better word. thanx Howard

I wholeheartedly agree with Howard's comments. You all know how much i enjoy the Emanate label stuff and the two recent Emanate cds, Lilienthal's Castor & Pollux and if.then.else's Realizations, as well as the new ultra-limited Sybarite 7" are no exception. A few weeks ago i was one of the lucky few to see emanate artists if.then.else and solenoid eat and then play live here in cleveland. They excelled at both! I have a Sony MZ-R50 and it's awesome (although no longer a current model). Avoid the R55 at all costs. Sharp makes some nice models, as does Aiwa. http://www.minidisc.org/ is a *VERY* thorough resource and alt.audio.minidisc is helpful too. They should be good starting points. As for mics, I don't know. I'm still researching them myself. Try these links out: http://www.core-sound.com//mics.html http://www.soundprofessionals.com/binaural.htm http://www.dimensional.com/~reasoner http://www.sonicstudios.com http://members.aol.com/rhcp9876/microphones.html http://www.arches.uga.edu/~tidmarsh/binmic.html

I guess that means I have to provide some IDMish stuff too... For anyone who cares, I bought the em:t 2000 2xCD compilation today (used). It's my first taste of em:t and I'm pretty satisfied so far. Disc 1 is far better... superfuzz@home.com

I bought my mics from CoreSound (http://www.core-sound.com//mics.html) and have been very pleased. I'm using them with my Sony MiniDisc (model number escapes me) and they work great. I highly recommend the windscreens for an extra $10 if you're going to do any outdoor recordings or walking around while recording. Wind static can easily ruin your recording. I've used my mics to record everything from live music to random wanderings through SF and have just sent them off with a friend to Bali, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. If anyone is interested I'd love to trade field recordings found sounds. Especially interested in public transportation (trains, subways) and street musicians as well as other random wanderings through cities. - c At 08:28 PM 10/5/99 -0400, Superfuzz wrote:
