I was watching tv ... mindlessly minding my own business... when I saw the little sort of heleted figure which is on Blech II ... dome over its head sticks for arms sticks for legs ... then some funky 3d words ... I swear they said something about desginersrepublic ... then a whole mess of floating arrows ... while some cheesy techno rambles on in the background ... and some silly graphics for some new *video game* on play station ??? Anyone have any details on this odd collaboration? URL is www.wipeout3.com... looks quasi-designers? still poking around there though ... But the same arrows are in the site ... looks toooooo much like them ... info info info? phil

Actually, if you check out http://www.psygnosis.com/wipeout3/game/developers/ on the wipeout3 page, you'll notice the reference to the designers' republic. They did a lot of graphic designy stuff for wipeout xl, too ... you'll see their little stick-people logos and such around the tracks. As for the game, it's completely insane. Friend of a friend happened to experience it for the first time while under the effects of copious thc, which was a nigh religious eyecandy experience. The intro bit with the racing team logos flashing around everywhere is likely to cause orgasms in Warp-loving IDM listers. TDR's grubby little handprints are all over it, and the game is far cooler for it. I can't think of any other games that have actual Design Merit (other than Fallout 2 maybe ... hmm). The game has TDR visual craziness, hovercraft flying around everywhere, and the even the HUD in-game is more relentlessly bad ass than that of any other recent psx game recently released. Frankly, it spanks. The music, as noted from the commercial, sucks ass. More Sasha and Propellerheads and stuff. Oh well ... one flaw in an otherwise worthy game. Go rent it and comment to your friends on the design phattiness while you 0wn them at high speeds. Can't wait to see it on PC, it will probably look even better. ---- "There is no gang of 'intelligent techno' freaks here who break showroom windows to steal pocket calculators." - Jouni Alkio Jeff Pitrman [cCM] jeff@spof.net http://bling.spof.net

If you're after more Designers Republic in computer games, check out Hard War on the PC. Much overlooked. It plays like a cross between Elite and Mercenary. The game takes place on the surface of a planet, full of interconnected cities and territories controlled by various factions. The player must forge some career for himself within this world and/or get involved in a twisty-turny plot. Great stuff. DR have their design scattered all over the place (if you're familiar with DR -- you'll recognise the box in an instant) and the game's soundtrack comprises exclusively of Warp artists -- Autechre, Black Dog, LFO, Squarepusher and Rac. Don't get too excited though -- no exclusive tracks, just stuff from existing EPs/LPs. The music suits the game's atmosphere perfectly though. Have a sniff around the bargain bins and you may find a copy. The game itself is actually very good, although the playing area could have been bigger. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/

The designers republic are collaborating again with Psygnosis for Wipeout 3. I got a promo CD-ROM that has all the artwork and it looks pretty nice.... ObMusic: The Wipeout XL soundtrack was a nice idea but sold miserably.... so for Wipeout 3 they brought in Sasha to produce the soundtrack. He wrote a few tracks in addition to selecting a few bits from the usual suspects (Orbital, Underworld, etc.). Paul Van Dyke has a track on there as well..... Poke around on the net or go to one of those WipeOut 3 parties (they had one recently in New York). Aaron

As much as I like the odd bit of Orbital, Underworld and even Sasha (although he should stick to remixing rather than producing -- what was 'Xpander' all about, ripping off Spooky's 'Little Bullet'?), I'd like to see a Wipeout game with some slightly less commercial IDM on it. In fact, I'll probably drop Psygnosis a note with some recommendations for Wipeout 4 (which has been confirmed for PS2). -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/

TDR did the original design for the first Wipeout. They were contracted first just to do the packaging but Psygnosis liked their work so much they asked them to design the look for the ships and tracks as well. They also worked with Psygnosis on Colony Wars. d0ktor -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Pitrman <jeff@spof.net> To: Phil C <pchampon@sefl.satelnet.org>; idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Tuesday, September 28, 1999 5:21 AM Subject: Re: (idm) designersrepublic

Former Spooky member Charlie May set up his current studio with Sasha and they now work together co-writing. The foundations of Xpander came from some unreleased May material circa '92. More recycling than ripping off.
