Maybe it was another list I'm on, but I'm pretty sure that I saw a couple of mentions of a band from New Zealand called The Necks here on IDM fairly recently. Well, I'm currently listening to a promo of their 1994 album "Aquatic" which has been liscenced by Carpet Bomb and will be released in a few weeks. It's wonderful, hypnotic stuff - two long tracks of piano/Hammond, bass and percussion, merging to create a sort of alien ambient jazz. Not what you might expect from Carpet Bomb, but damn cool. Greg

Funny you should mention this...I was just listening to "Piano, Bass, Drums" by them and thinking it was really nice. Notcher typical IDM fare, but quite pleasant nonetheless. jeff Greg Clow wrote:

Yep I met the Carpet Bomb guys in New York when I was there recently and they said they were licensing Aquatic. Cool! The Necks are in fact and _Australian_ group, not New Zealand. From Sydney, where I come from. Lovely guys, and AMAZING live preformers too. Piano, bass and drums, creating minimalist, slowly evolving pieces influenced by jazz, funk, dub, minimalism and probably even hip hop... For those interested, they are: Chris Abrahams - piano/keys Lloyd Swanton - double bass Tony Buck - drums They have 6 albums out, including the soundtrack to the Australian movie The Boys that came out last year. Those Carpet Bomb peoples really have great taste (their Highways Over Gardens comp was one of the very best CDs of last year) and are quite brave releasing something that's superficially at least quite different stylistically. However, I think the music would appeal greatly to practically everyone on this list. Same Tony Buck that struck in early incarnations of Otomo's Ground Zero? I also have to throw in multiple praises for this release & for Doron & Co. for seeing it through. I hear strong echoes of 'In a Silent Way' era Miles (not an easy thing to even attempt replication of) up to & including Herbie's "Sextant", & classic Blue-Note era Hammond-driven slow-burners, as well as the whole post-disco/techno live-band CD-Side rhythmic repetition (MM&W, Grassy Knoll, etc...), with just enough reverb & 'mystery noise' to keep you in a light lull for its duration. A key release for an already key label, perfect for those alpha-state ascension sessions & successive Sunday morning (afternoon? evening?) "let's re-aquaint ourselves w/the earth" exercises. So chill it's borderline criminal... -Våt ____________________ Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge PO BOX 382864. Cambridge, MA 02238 http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket/index.html

It is indeed the same Tony Buck - Peril etc. He's Australian, although he spends a lot of time in Berlin and Japan these days. Strong Zorn etc connections. Very glad you like it too, Hrvatski! I second the praise of Carpet Bomb - certainly an essential record label.
