Warm and dark.. hmm... Jochem Paap's "vrs.mbnt.pcs" might be a good one.. Also some of Steve Roach's work is minimal but "positive" in a way.. If you're looking for dark "ambient" I'd go for Main, Stratum Terror, Ambre, Tactile, Lustmord, Aube and Thomas Köner. Some Coil records might also be worthwhile to check out, ie. "How to destroy angels" and "Time Machines". Warm and dark ambient is an interesting combination, the artists I mentioned above are mainly dark but are certainly heartwarming if you ask me. Hope this helps, Matt. -----Original Message----- From: idm-owner@hyperreal.org [mailto:idm-owner@hyperreal.org]On Behalf Of Bennett Gross Sent: Thursday, August 12, 1999 8:35 AM To: IDM Mailing List Subject: (idm) Dark Ambient Stuff In search of warm, dark ambient work. Rod Modell's "The Autonomous Music Project" suits that description pretty nicely. Sorry, I don't have a label name, and it's limited edition maybe, but I dig it. The packaging is great, too - it's a big clear plastic envelope sort of thing with fold-out liner notes. Cheers, Bill Bennett Gross wrote:

You might also check out Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, and Arcanta (all on Projekt with Arcanta having a few releases on Cold Meat Industries as well). Then Brian Eno has some rather dark work out there as well, but I'm not certain of the specific releases. ::CyBeRiNa FLuX:: http://www.abbadon.com/cyberina

It just so happens my latest fave fits the bill.. Jon Hassell. Definitely start with his collaboration with Brian Eno called Fourth World Vol. 1 Possible Musics. Then explore his catalog, fantastic artist. The new one is fine too, but kind of like 'Hassell unplugged'. Note that his work is not dark in the sense of negative or menacing. But it is certainly warm, and could be described as darkish. Uncompromising music, a synthesis of ancient and modern (the result called fourth world). Though I've known of him for years I've just in the past week realized he is one of the greatest artists out there (to me). He joins the select few of acts I completely go gaga for.. Seefeel, Oval. Which reminds me.. latter-day Seefeel and earlier Oval are also very warm and dark in places, you might enjoy them also. If you want to create your own warm and dark ambient music get a dijiridu and drone on. =) Cheers, Brad
