I was listening to In Sides today for the first time in months, and I was reminded of how beautiful this cd is. Haven't heard Middle of Nowhere, but I heard some people say that it's pretty awful. Hard to imagine Orgital slipping if that really is true. Is Snivilisation better than or as good as In Sides? How does it sound in comparison? Thinking about buying a copy. By some strange synchronicity, so was I - which is why I'm responding to this, even though I'm no authority on the Hartnolls. I never particularly liked In Sides to begin with, but it plinked along pleasantly enough when I put it on a little while ago.

It's much more "Dance". I didn't bother getting it, after having it here for a week or so borrowed from a friend I returned it without any regret.

It's not nearly as good as the 'brown album' - if you've got that, you have the essential Orbital already. But if you loved In Sides, you might get some pleasure from Sniv as well. Somewhat cynically... I must say I'm quite a fan of In Sides, defniltey up there with Music Has the Right to Children and Richard D James Album in my book. Which leads to a question--the bonus cd included with my copy has a 30 minute mix of The Box on it. It's incredible, dramatic and like a movie. Anyone know of other idm or electronic type songs which are like this? Ie, very long songs which have a film-like quality to them? The only songs I know that are long (20minutes+), are Monolake's "Gobi" Ep (which is not very film-like, just very mood setting) and Goldie's "Mother" (which is relatively film like but imho very boring and, uh, bad). on the 313 list a few months back we had a discussion about epic techno songs. i seem to remember a 15 minute techno song being a decidedly 1993-4 phenomenon. i'm probably gonna embarrass myself, but there are three tracks that spring to mind as great: laurent garnier, "acid eiffel", 1993, 14 minutes; sabres of paradise, "smokeblech II" david holmes mix, 1993 (?), 15 minutes; sven vath, "l'esperanza", 1994, 12 minutes. for real long stuff, look into vladislav delay. his album on chain reaction, _multila_, has a really great 24-minute beaty track. on his ambient side, _entan_ on mille plateaux has four 16-minute+ tracks. and for drum'n'bass, the carpet bomb label comp _highways over gardens_ has a handful of really epic, shifting, changing tracks. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# no particular place names/no particular song icq 5562209 i've been hiding/what am i hiding from? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If it's okay to mention Moby around here, then I'd say find a copy of his "hymn.alt.quiet.version" EP - one long track (half an hour, or thereabouts) that covers all sorts of ambient soundscapes. Pretty. I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think that Snivilisation is way better... I haven't listened to it for some years now, but I loved it when it was new. It really has some great moments. You should better make your own edited Minidisc version of it, though, because some tracks are really awful... but besides them, I think it's their best album... /Johan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i would say that snivilisation does not have the consistency that in sides has. i know that snivilisation was intended to be an experimental type of release so that explains it. nonetheless, it is a great album. the first song, "forever", justifies the purchase of the disc. it is still one of the most amazing songs i've ever heard. every single person who i've let listen to the song instantly wanted me to dub them a copy. buy it, it's good middle of nowhere does suck. i was so excited when it came out and was struck dumb by how bad it was the first and second song are okay but the rest just goes downhill shaun np: biosphere "substrata" on one channel "ccec" on the other --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Snivilisation never did excite me too much (but it is a relatively clever album). However, the brown album, Orbital 2, and the remix CD "Diversions" are in *constant* rotation in my CD player, and have been for several years now - my all-time favorite Orbital material... :: e v a n k. s t o n e :: w e b p r o g r a m m i n g e n g i n e e r :: m u l t i m e d i a l i v e :: p e t a l u m a, c a, u s a ------------------------------ :: mailto:evan@mmlive.com :: http://www.mmlive.com

Since there already seems to be a couple of bucks in the pot I'm gonna add my bits... For me Snivilisation is the best Orbital album. With the exception of certain tracks (PETROL, Chime, Mobius) the rest of their material doesn't really settle with me. But Sniv's 'Kein Trink Wasser' and 'Are We Here?' are amazing pieces.
