That song is definitely not in 3/4. It could be 6/8 if anything, but 12/8 feels more correct. Someone asked how you can tell the difference. 3/4 -- Count at a leisurely tempo, ONE - two - three - ONE - two - three 6/8 -- Faster, but the beats that are emphasized (1 & 4) are at a similarly comfortable pace as the 1-2-3 above, or probably slower. The bar(measure) is split in half, each half split into three, like this: ONE-two-three-FOUR-five-six. Maybe you've heard "We Have Joy" by Killing Joke (*1* & 2 & 3 & *4* - 5 - 6 - ). That's about as 6/8 as it gets. Counting in threes would be too fast, and each bar divides neatly into two, quick groups of three beats. 12/8 -- A whole lot like 4/4, except each beat divides into triplets. You could count ONE-two-three-FOUR-five-six etc. but typically it would be more natural to think One-and-a- Two-and-a- Three-and-a- Four-and-a (like the TFF song). I recently finished _Whistler's Bombardier_. Several tracks use unusual time signatures (such as 13/4, or switching between 6/4 & 5/4...not in that flashy Rush way, but rather a bit like traditional African music), as well as some rhythm without a clear pulse. I will post a couple of MP3s. And more... 200MB of webspace that I've been too swamped to use yet... Some surprises are on the way. --Mark __ Burning Rome : SENSELESS CD on Mindfield Records MindCD03 Cathartium 14 < http://www.burningrome.com/ > < more high-quality MP3s coming soon >

Just to add my 2c to the talk over time signatures I've enjoyed recently. What would you consider the time signature of the strange rework of Sour Times on the PNYC Portishead live album? (yeah, admit it, some of you have to own this one) Sorta goes ONE-two-three-FOUR-five-six-SEVEN-eight. I can't really figure it out, myself, and it's always bothered me. Gil sane@netreach.net

On a similar note, can anyone tell me what the time sig for Sven Va:th's "Fusion" is? It seems so wierd to me, I can't even begin to describe it. It's bugged me since i bought it (about a year ago). _________________________________ Adam Roesch / roesch@augsburg.edu University of Idaho / Moscow / ID / USA Visit my Fila Brazillia/Pork Recordings fan site: http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/pork/ "Because success needs killing" TRICKY

That's 4/4 the way I count. Remember, the accents do not need to be on the downbeat. Syncopation. --Mark __ Burning Rome : SENSELESS CD on Mindfield Records MindCD03 Cathartium 14 < http://www.burningrome.com/ > < more high-quality MP3s coming soon >

Found it today- Rei Harakami's album "Unrest Works" has a quickstep waltz on it, you might argue that it's in 6/8 but I think if you listen to the drum programming and check when the chords change you'll find it really is ONE-two-three ONE-two-three and not in six. Since the backbeat has infiltrated everything, it's hard to write anything in 3 that doesn't sound ponderous, so I see what you're saying and why... but Harakami just jacks up the tempo so you don't even realize it's a waltz until the bass comes in. a waltz is a style of partner-oriented gestural body movement. not everything in 3/4 is a waltz just like four on the floor doesn't mean "hustle." this whole "ONE two three" thing is just an oom pa pa stereotype, plenty of 3/4 compositions avoid it (check that love theme thing from dr. zhivago). regardless, at least one of the various forms of either "forcasa" or "aguilla" by bola is in an even 3. eric
