well i'm sure i'll get strung up for saying this... but in my humble opinion, i belive that oval blows autechre and chain reaction out of the water. they cannot hold a candle to oval. however you should also know that chain reaction and autechre are nothing alike, and are in COMPLETELY different ballpark. Comparing oval to ae and cr, is like (pardon me) comparing apples to oranges. you can't do it. Oval doesn't really consider what he's doing as music per se. and we could get into a huge conversation about mr popp and his theories, but it's better not to. what they sound like is this...it's all based on faulty digital media, primarily cd's skipping. it's amazing. my personal favorite oval cd is his collaboration with the sound artist christoph charles, dok. also great is systemich and diskont_94. get everything. -joshua...

i think 20 or 30 years from now, oval will stiil sound revolutionary, while a lot of other stuff popular on this list will sound dated, like, "oh, that's what they thought was cool back in 1999"

Hopefully it will also still sound cool though, like, well, Douglas Lilburn, but he's an NZ composer who would mean nothing... but I'm sure everyone has their heroes from back 20 or 30 years ago. So what was the music that doesn't dated again? What music does not sound dated? I can't really think of any actually. I think the concept of music sounding 'dated' is a little relative and probematic... my .02 Nate On Sun, 31 Jan 1999, Michael Upton wrote:

i agree...there are few artists who can do that...the only one i can think of that has currently done that is this heat, who in my mind (and as far as i can tell many others) made music twenty years ago, that sounds like it was done today...there are many things i consider genre breaking and fantastic ie kraftwerk, but still sound very dated. to my ear, this heat don't sound dated at all...(except perhaps when they sing, but even then, on songs such as "health and effeciency" and "twlight furniture" are still strikinly contemporary) -joshua...

since no one else has said anything about this, i thought i would... but because of you mistake with bjork, it made me think of oval's remix of the pizzicato 5 which is amazing...(even though i hate the p5...it's perhaps one of his best remixes, and certainly the most upbeat...) also, if you like that vein of oval, i'd look at his new 12"s...especially aero deko, which is think is his finest to date... -joshua...

the two 12"s are on the american cd... the cd has some extra tracks... the japanese cd is slightly different then the american one... nice thing about oval, is that he doesn't repeat himself...so there really isn't anything he does that sounds like szeneriodisk (which is in my opinion, his best to date...) the closest to that style would be his *amazing* remix of the pizzicato 5....i bring this track up all the time, and no one has said anything about it...but the stuff on the new cd is alot like that... if you don't like dok, i'd recommend systemmich...it's fantastic... i should also comment you should buy szeneriodisk just for it's goddamn amazingly beautiful cover art... matches the music perfectly... hope this helps, -joshua...
