Talking abiut Soho shops, Ambient Soho is a lot better than it used to be. I went in there the other day also, found it far too expensive in comparison to the other selectadiscs, but the bloke behind the counter knows what he's talking about, and isn't afraid to spin a few discs for you, or you're welcome to listen to them through headphones. It had a copy of the recent Universal Indicator 12", 10" + 7" pack on replex with carrier bag as well for #10 if anyone's interested. Selectadisc definately gets me thumbs up. Sister ray has got some amazing records, you can often pick up rare rephlex/R&S/Harthouse etc.. at very reasonable prices. I'm glad somebody cleared them out before I got there, I thought they were getting lax. Maybe next time i'll get there first. As for HMV (utter repugnance) I managed to get two CD's for #3.99 each, the Infonet comp 'Usibility now' and a Drum and Bass comp called 'Spectrum', which features stuff from Goldie and a track called 'ChillOut' by Alex Reece which if my memory serves me right is CO----OOOl. As for Virgin (still Utter Repugnance!!!) I managed to pick up a Delerium recs split 10" featuring a track by Redeye, The first 'Maiden Voyage' 12" by Global Comms and a Universal groove 4 track comp 12" of trance, as well as an out of romford album. So even though the corporate shops appaul me so, they do have alot of bargains. Also, Sometimes Vinyl Experience down Hanway St. Just around the corner from Virgin, has some Vinyl Bargains for dance stuff, I've managed to buy lots of warp and harthouse stuff there for very reasonable prices. It's just a look in, not a treck to, type of shop. Restoraz???? I know now that restoraz is RAZ, who has recorded under the names Solitaire Gees, ie slumberland also from the same warp range, Also Jaco. Apparently lots of his stuff is released through Fourth Wave Records in Huddersfield. I haven't found any more info yet. Any one who can further this investigation, go for it. Info on fourth wave records? Thanks Nick.

I believe this is Steve Paton's label. Paton recently did a superb record for Planet E, as well as remixes of Dave Angel's Sound Enforcer project on Rising High. The latest record on 4th Wave is by Wavescape and is called _Autoerotica_. It's *very* melodic techno-lite, and didn't really grab me in the store.... - Matthew "I grew up thinking that techno music is actually something that you can't imagine. That is techno at its best. If you hear something that you'd never expect to hear - that's techno. If you hear something that kind of sounds like you've heard it before, then it's not techno." - Jeff Mills

If you check out the Feb issue of Future Music, there's an interview with System 7. If you want to hear some of the new stuff the cover CD comes with a Carl Craig remix of 'Sirenes' . The new album is called 'The Power of seven'. I'm also not a big System 7 fan, so I can't really tell you what the tracks like in comparison to their other stuff. The Carl Craig remix is not really reminicent of Carl's 69 stuff though, but it has got some of his style to it. P.S. thanks for the info on the DAT/DCC so can any one tell me of a decent...low price DAT machine that's widely available and expected costs... Best Wishes, Nick.

Well, you can go with the same machine I did, and use the Tascam DA-20 for $829.00 at American Musical Express. Excellent machine, and worth the extra 400 bucks for an upgrade to the DA-30 MKII w/ jog shuttle wheel. It's a helluva lot better than DCC, MD, or whatever the hell these throwaway machines are. Go DAT, and you'll never go back! Derek Jordan

A: because people probably wouldn't buy both 'Substrata' and the live album with HIA in the same month. No need to cannibalize sales. C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker)

Yeah, it's capitalism. And it's crap, at times. Don't let such mechanism influence the diffusion of music... I don't own a Joyrex original, and I wouldn't have the money to buy one if I came across it. That's because *I* don't get paid the right price for the job I do (do you?). So it doesn't always work, see? It just doesn't cater for spiritual needs, and often fails to do so with tangible things, too. Have to say I'm not really sure where this notion of Joyrexs being as expensive as BMWs originated but I found two at 7 UKP each about two years ago. Although a little expensive for a four track 45 it's nowhere near the proportions people are alleging. I sent the second copy to someone in Canada at cost before anyone asks.
