i can't speak for most of those labels as i've considered their output mediocre from the start (and i reserve my rather interesting-bashing for the atom heart list). however, the point stands: the artists and releases on those labels are not discussed with the consistency and veracity that skam artists and releases are. the alternative to following labels/artists that you've liked in the past is calling bullshit on them when they release inferior product. (hey, i bought the push-button objects EP too!), not continuing to speak highly of them because, basically, they didn't totally suck (that pbo comes close, tho). i think my point is that a lot of great music is coming out that skam has nothing to do with, and yet people continue to limit themselves to the known. considering skam's recent ouput, i can only guess at their motivation for doing so...let me put my money where my mouth is, though. these are some of the releases that i think skam people would be very interested in if they weren't so concerned about labels: -- Funckarma, Funckarma EP (Djak-Up-Bitch) -- Duplex, Duplex EP (Djak-Up-Bitch) -- EOG, EOG EP (Djak-Up-Bitch) -- Various Artists, Connecting Electro-nix Networks (Nature) -- O.S.T., Fashion for Passion (Dial) -- To Rococo Rot + D, s/t (Soul Static Sound) -- Lowfish, Fear Not the Snow... (Suction) -- Nobukazu Takemura, Meteor (Thrill Jockey) -- Arovane, Icol Diston (Din) sc

of all these, i've only ever seen 4 in stores (i own 2 of those). skam releases, however, are easily available around here. i found the jega-ska009 at a few places. same for the push button objects which i gave a listen to only to nevermind it -- which is what i should have done with ska009. i guess like many i was drawn to this label mostly because of boards of canada, but i didn't like anything else that they put out, except the 0161 comp, which is with v/vm anyway so it doesn't count. anyway, i disgress. my point is that i've wanted to buy the o.s.t. record for a while but it's impossible to find around here. i've never ever seen an arovane record although i've heard the name dropped quite a few times. i have no clue who djak-up-bitch are. so, i'd have to agree with you about skam; hell, they _are_ called SKAM for god's sake. (& i'm not even attempting to guess what music aus strom _really_ means!) this is purely subjective content, please don't scream at me. i just tend to be indifferent to that music although i can understand its appeal, but to be honest, autechre seem like such forward-looking musicians it baffles me that the music they endorse is so tame & unchallenging. or maybe they don't really have that much say in who gets signed. what do i know. -- david turgeon at http://www.notype.com

you have a mailing address, don't you? i do 80 percent of my record buying by mailorder. djak-up-bitch are a dutch label associated with i-f/clone/etc. their releases (some of them, anyway; the ones listed) are in the skam/mas/etc. vein insofar as they are a less dancefloor-oriented mutation of hip-hop/electro/techno/electronix, but have so far blown away most of what's appeared through those labels in recent months.

"synthesized music," if memory serves. sc

yes i do, but i don't own a credit card, which i think is quite a healthy thing although it limits what i can buy through mailorder. (& don't tell me to use checks, it costs around $7 just to produce one in u.s. funds.)
