haven't the days when every release on Rephlex were assumed to be RDJ long gone? is Leila really Leila or just RDJ dressed up as one of his ugly trolls from the windowlicker vid - oooooh, conspiracy alert. On a brighter note Skam gets better and better with the release of the Push Button Objects 12", a must have for all you beatfreaks me thinks. Looking forward to Mask 500. Is the Schematic 12" still readily available or will I have to fork out an absolute fortune for it? C'mon, who's got one they want to trade or sell? Finally, just how many mixes by Plaid are out there? sge -----Original Message----- From: Adrien Artzt <artzt@hotmail.com> To: IkerdEA@lmtas.lmco.com <IkerdEA@lmtas.lmco.com> Cc: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: 20 April 1999 20:30 Subject: Re: (idm) global goon / clones of ae/afx

Leila is really leila (i'm assuming it's the woman on the cover, although not a kid anymore). Former keyboardist for bjork, her sister roya has sang for Archive and Grooverider. A local weekly had a review that alluded that leila was infact rdj, so i had to track him down and set him straight. In the record store teh guy works in, all copies still have a sticker that says "Produced by the Aphex Twin", which is really misleading. I think. At the time, i attributed it to sexism that when a woman put out a great album, maybe it was done by a man. But now i know the guy and i doubt he'd do that. _________________________________ Adam Roesch / roesch@augsburg.edu Augsburg College / Minneapolis / MN / USA http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/ The world's most complete Pork Recordings/Fila Brazillia site: http://dogbert.augsburg.edu/~roesch/pork/ "The only disease we need in our blood is love" TRICKY

Besides, last year there was a one-hour documentary about Leila Arab shown on a major UK TV channel (South Bank Show, ITV). Apologies to all those RDJ conspiracists out there, but Leila is very much for real and produces all her own work. (Well, I've a sneaky suspicion the single version of 'Feeling' features some uncredited co-production or remixing by Plaid.) -- /\/)ark headspin - http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

and utterly superb it is too. all these people criticizing rephlex, i really don't understand them! for me, space love and the album were, by some distance, the best releases of last year. imagination is rare in this music these days - when are these dour, overblown hyper-programmed novelty records ever going to stop being made? <waves>

hi idmers, last night as i skimmed through the 2nd global goon lp (pink girl on cover) i thought to myself "this has got to be the aphex twin!" it sounds like what would have been the softer side of richard james from 1993-1995 the tracks also sounded older than the first "goon" lp any theories on this? is it DEFINATELY NOT rdj or just maybe his supposed ex-roomate? i also had a quick listen to afx's 'hangable auto bulb' 1 and i thought to call the whole schematic, choc ind.,MAS worm interface..movement 'clones of autechre' seem unfair as this e.p. must of had just as powerful an effect on today's hype-rprogrammers. melodically autechre is probally the greater influence as the twin's melodies are a bit too exuberant compared to the clones, but the rythm programming on h.a.b.1 must of been a huge ifluence on these guys. also on this subject...i probably would have bought the new solar x lp but a friend played me some tracks off it that were such rdj rip-offs that i felt mad at solar x for being such a copy cat. seriously, there is a track that sounds exactly like one of the darker tracks on rdj's 'girl/boy' ep. there's a fine line netween being influenced by someone and being a wanna-be peace to all- adrien _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Give it another go. Listen to all sixteen tracks rather than just a few. Sure, a few tracks have that same frantic programming style as used by RDJ in 'Bucephalus Bouncing Ball' and 'Formula', but that's about as RDJ-ish as it gets. Solar X has very obviously been influenced by Aphex (pace), Autechre (programming/depth) and Boards of Canada (crunchy drums & melodies), but the album is very much his own and his own style has clearly emerged by the time the last track has finished.

Check out Solar X's 'Outre X Mer', where you'll find Solar X doing a lot of RDJ/Ae-type stuff long before RDJ and Ae actually did it. -- /\/)ark headspin - http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/
