hi, i missed the 'how i got into idm' thread, but am interested in hearing from as many of you on this list for a little thing i'm writing. as this was a thread before, it might be best to please respond privately to me. by the way, i used to be an indie-rocker. thanks, g. -----Original Message----- From: IDMKitten@aol.com [mailto:IDMKitten@aol.com] Sent: Monday, April 17, 2000 2:48 PM To: step@systorm.com; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] missing: romanticism In a message dated 04/17/2000 2:30:28 PM Eastern Daylight Time, step@systorm.com writes: << i think i bridged a very stange gap (please comment if i'm not alone) from very dark aggressive industrial tracks (tkk, nin, download, etc) to the more aggressive side of electronic.. older jungle, big beat, etc.. then i progressed into the sub-genre of idm.. i dunno.. looking back it seems strange that i complete 180'd from industrial to idm.. they seem so close.. but so far apart in my eyes.. >> same here, but throw in some sebadoh, pavement, and blues explosion and you've got my teen angst youth. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

haha...a faction has formed between my group of friends....one side is the vocal music reggae/david bowie/talking heads side, and the other is the idm/ambient electronic....a few of us are into both, but most lean to one side...i personally love indie..you know, pavement, yo la tengo, polvo, other stuff...those are my roots..how about post rock? tortoise, sea and cake (or should i say john mcentire)...mogwai sucks in my opinion...well they have a couple of good tunes.

i used to listen to a lot of bedhead/low/american analog set..still do. i wasn't really surprised to see the owl low remixes, or u-ziq and kevin shields remixing YLT. i could care less about mogwai and their umbros or whatever. in my experience, i've met idmers that have come from two backgrounds: hip-hop and indie. usually, the hip-hop kids dig the dj sets and faster, jazzier grooves, while the indie folks cross over into the more ambient stuff. now i know that this is a generalization, but it has been pretty accurate and representative so far. on the other hand, i have a sneaking suspicion that this might be a regional thing (austin, tx) rather than a national experience. topic tangent #2: how old is everyone? i think that most of the IDMers that i speak with are mid-to-late 20's (25 here). i ask this because i think that it does help define the context of "where we're from". regards, seesik On Mon, 17 Apr 2000, Daniel Laburu wrote:

me, well i used to like quite a bit of stuff and still do alot actualy. i just think that idm is a great multiverse of music that im glad still exists in a non teeniebopper language. yes, im young im twenty but i think that age really has nothing to do with it...ive listened to many things such as homesick james to charley musclewhite all the way to nailbomb and soulfly. i think the reson i like idm so much is because its always what i wanted to makerather than listen to and it has grown on me. ive grown up listening to aux88 and superstar djs like okenfold and saunderson and i think the things that these electronic artists were lacking is what i love so much about the music i like now. im still down with fugazi sloan sonic youth and mudhoney i just think the whole plastic/experimental feel of what i listen to now follows my own footsteps that ive taken recently. anyway, if youd all like to hear some of my tracks go ahead and dl em at www.mp3.com/tangible1 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
