I know questions like this come up quite often, but has anyone got some recommends for stuff like the J Saul Kane compiled 'Beat Classic'? ie. (early) 80s hiphop from a primarily instrumental side of things, and generally crazy and adventurous. Oh yeah, and I have a dodgy old industrial sounding 12" by someone called Statik which has a J Saul Kane mix on it. ANyone know anything about this? It'd be from the late 80s, from memory. The Beat Classics comp was pretty good. I am not that knowledgeable about hip hop as old as alot of that stuff. I can say that my friend Coby was pulling out some really old Schoolly D records that had the Tackhead/On U Sound crew producing (or collaborating) and that stuff was cool! I'll forward your post and see if he wants to respond.

I've heard some really great old stuff at Coby's that was excellent. Some of it totally sounded like stuff that might of influenced Coldcut when they did Beats and Pieces. This stuff was OLD.

I'm sure EVERYONE knows this but J Saul Kane was also involved with Eon in the early days. I know he produced (and maybe even co-wrote) the Spice and the whole Eon lp. J Saul Kane has definitely been one of the best trip hop artists out there. Recording under the name Depth Charge, Octagon Man, and Alexander's Dark Band.
