here's a question i've been pondering for a long time. I've noticed that the term IDMer is used in a lot of posts to this list. I was just curious; what does it mean to be an idmer exactly? Is it just a term one can claim if one likes some [if not all] of the music mentioned on this list? I don't have a lot of money so while my meagre music collection does pay sincere homage to such IDM staples as Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plastikman, Mouse On Mars, blah blah blah, and so on, I tend to actually hear the more obscure stuff from my boy's (seemingly) weekly rekkid deliveries :) I can't buy a ton of music, tho i wish i could :(, but my boy has tons of IDM and i really dig just about everything he plays. When IDM-ish events crop up in Toronto we both go. Are we both IDMers? Or am i just a poseur and only he is an idmer 'cause he actually owns the music? I'm not trying to sound peevish, i'm just honestly curious. Thanks -- ========================================================== Words fail. n.

I would claim that an appreciation of the music is enough to be an "IDMer". I am known to throw the term around a little more than is necessary and usually I use it to describe an individual who has an appreciation of the music (can listen to it without saying "what is this crap". Now I would not expect much of anyone to like everything that falls into this increasingly broad musical category. There are a few IDM acts that many on this list absolutely adore which I just cannot get into (I probably even say things like "what is this crap!"). I own a fair amount of cd's, but that is only because that is the only way I can hear most of the music I love. I rarely find mp3's of IDM artists (other than Aphex or Autechre) and less often hear such artists on the radio (except for <PLUG> "space disco for fish taco's" on KUCI </PLUG> which I absolutely LOOOOOOVE). So basically I think it is an appreciation of the music that is IDM. Ownership of many cd's, though causes worshipping by us who are less fortunate, does not necessarily make the person any more of an IDMer. It just makes them luckier to hear more of the music that we all love. [Sn] who hasnt been lurking much lately nowpumpin: Aquabats - Return of the Aquabats (I am in a silly mood, get off my back) :)

wow, now that's an "insite"! Anyway, just to find something to keep this relevant to IDM, if anyone is interested in a Zenflesh compilation "amduscias" I'd like to trade or sell it off...
