I drove out of my way today to pick up the new Bola. Mauver seems to be another dissapointing release from Skam, and it's even from one of their heavy hitters. I'm about ready to forget about them. It just blows my mind that some of the US labels (ie schematic) are releasing top-notch albums which are miles beyond those of the grandfather SKAM. "Lily of the valley" is a fantastic compilation. Funny you mention this... I've just got it, and I really, really like it... then again, his "soup" album didn't do too much for me - seems Bola is hit or miss, at least for us two... :) (I guess the soothing melodies of "soup" were too soothing for my taste...)

I thought 'soup' was one of the best things that came out that year (98?) and i'm really digging 'mauver'. more percussive than 'soup' with really nice subtle melodies hiding between the beats.... mikebee --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It sounds as though BOLA has been assimilated into the AUTECHRE bleep-bloop school. Sad in my eyes, he had some very pretty melodies going on in Soup... The last track is some of the same-old, however. -Gropo 209.6.182.146 http://www.gropo.com MP3 RadioCast: http://216.32.166.75:8774 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

To answer your question: Mauver is a definite change from Soup. It's more aggressive, fewer melodies (no arpeggios), and more percussive bleepbloop samples. Some very electro textures are present, less IDM. One IMO really weak rap track (not saying that because I don't like rap) which might have some kitch value for folks. The last track has very soup-y pads and percussion, but it's a little formulaic to my ears. It's not that it's _bad_, but I just find myself lost for good things to say about it. I haven't liked any SKAM releases since "hi scores", and that's pretty dated. I stopped buying them after the push button objects 12". I don't want to start a war on the subject, but it's amazing to me that folks say that the schematic label is derivative and inferior when the label they are supposed to be emulating (for the most part) isn't putting out quality material, or even taking itself seriously most of the time.
