Dear IDM'ers, PLAID compilation on WARP : WITHOUT PREJUDICE ============================================= Recent postings on IDM have referred to an imminent "Plaid" Compilation on WARP RECORDS. As you may know, the original 10 EP's by The Black Dog, Balil, Plaid, Atypic (et al) were (c) Black Dog Productions Ltd, and released on the Black Dog Productions, GPR and Rising High labels. They built the foundations of The Black Dog sound and are "classic" examples of Intelligent Dance Music. I am very proud of them, and look back on the material as an influential and important part of The Black Dog past, created by the three of us. A time of magick. Many fans have asked if we'll ever re-release the material, but the three of us felt the material deserved to remain intact, on vinyl. However, to my *utter* dismay, I now read on IDM that Ed & Andy (Plaid) have authorised this material to be ripped apart from it's original format and track-listing, into a compilation album for release on Warp. If this is true, it's quite patently nothing more than a sad attept to cash-in on the loyalty of Black Dog fans, greed that is no doubt fuelled by a recent article on "rare Black Dog collectables" in Muzik Magazine. Why invest money and time into promoting new artists, when you can just cash in on the classics? Easier than writing new material, eh? This material is NOT supposed to be re-arranged in this way, it completely changes the meaning and spirit of the releases. You can't remove an ingredient from a recipe and expect it to taste the same! Different artwork, different track listings and different formats will result in a lack-lustre and sad attempt to squeeze more money out of fans. It's not The Black Dog way. No attempt has been made by Warp to license this material from Black Dog Productions Ltd. If this compliation sees the light of day I will personally consider legal action against them. Are Warp setting a precedent? Are they telling their artists "you can now release any material you have licensed in the past on another label, without our permission" ?!! If this compliation ever does hit the shelves, we recommend you hold on to your hard-earned cash. why? Because we will post the entire Black Dog Productions back catalogue, with the original track listings, on the Internet in the super-friendly, easy to download MP3 format. Then you can make your own compliation. FOR NOTHING. It will be a very happy day for us all, when we can say goodbye to wanky record corporations like W*rp and S*ny. Before there are too many more responses on this subject, it's probably a good idea to remind everyone that April Fool's Day is fast approaching. Especially considering the fact that according to Ken, Warp hasn't approached BDP to license the material, we should take a great deal of care to use the proverbial grain of salt considering this release. I know just as little about this as everyone else on IDM, and I have the same balance of jubilation and disappointment that 1) It might come out, and 2) Ken doesn't want it to come out, but we should probably face the facts: it's *almost* too good to be true. .John. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

why not liscense the material to warp so they mass-produce it on cd, on the condition that they can't change track listing, art work, etc. i dunno if you can set binding conditions like that in liscensing, but it would be nice if black dog recordings were more available to the general public, as long as your artistic vision and integrity are respected.

Dear All, DOG FARTS : Without Prejudice ======================= This is mainly a response to Ken "black dog" Downie's MONKEY BUSINESS message. Yes we are releasing a compilation of old and unreleased material. It will contain tracks by PLAID, BALIL, ATYPIC & TURA. It will obviously not contain any "THE BLACK DOG" compositions or material written/co-written with Ken Downie (I.A.O./Discordian Popes). Most of this material is already available on various sites as MPfree files. The compilation will simply provide a good quality alternative and will be a concise collection for those that want it but dont want to pay madly inflated prices. We have repackaged it to avoid confusion with the originals and because it contains unreleased tracks. If you see this as a "Rip Off" just don't buy it. Having made up two thirds of Black Dog Productions from 1989 to 1995 we find it hard to understand how Ken thinks he has the rights to material he had no part in writing. Some of it was written in a communal studio which we had built up together and which, on our departure, was mostly kept by Ken along with the "Black Dog" name. So Ken got most of the musical/computing equipment and the name that we had all worked hard to develop. We walked away because it had become almost impossible to communicate and any reasonable settlement would be costly, painful and time consuming. Having left what was becoming a paranoid dictatorship we had to rebuild a studio and carry on with a name that was almost unknown. Ken is free to do as he wills with the "Black Dog", but how he feels justified in slagging off an independent like Warp while signing to Warner Bros is a doggist mystery. Warp have their faults but they have helped many and exploited few. We have released two albums with them and are working on a third, this compilation reclaims and clarifies some of our past. Thanks, plaid. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If any of you have the original "Monkey Business" post from Ken would you please mind forwarding it to me? (not the digest version) p.s. - so now that we've established this isn't a hoax - is there any chance these will be coming out on vinyl? Many thanks in advance...
