Hey, I was wondering if any of you could recommend a good and fast MP3 encoding program(.wav to MP3). I downloaded one but the bugger took over an hour to do a 5 minute track......seems way too long considering I'm on a pentium 200. Don't worry about me copying obscure Autechre mixes and putting them up on my page or anything. I just want to do a couple of my own tracks so ya'll can hear them Rob Codec! http://www.mindstorm.com/codec LogiQ http://www.sinless.com/logiq

It depends on the bandwidth you choose to encode it with. The generally accepted standard is 128k 44khz stereo, which will give you near-enough CD quality. Some people choose 112k. I think 176k is standard CD audio bandwidth. If you want to compromise, then a track will still sound reasonable in 56k 22khz stereo, although your listener needs a decent 16-bit sound card otherwise it will sound a bit hissy. 56k is far from perfect, but as a way of previewing tracks, it's ideal. I've a P200 MMX and it usually takes me about 15 minutes to encode a 5 minute track at 128k/44khz/stereo. The only problem is, if I'm encoding from CD to MP3 then I have to go through MSCDEX drivers, which give clicky sound. If I encode an MP3 from another source, such as tape or vinyl (routed into the line-in of my AWE64), then I get no clicks at all. Let me know when your tracks are available to listen. I hope to put my new ep out as an MP3 playlist/files, completely free of charge to all. Autechre fans should enjoy it. Should have it done soon. /\/)ark

Do you use CD-DA (cd direct audio?) this slurps the digital bytes right off the cd without going through any processing.

Don't worry about me copying obscure Autechre mixes and putting them up on my page or anything. I just want to do a couple of my own tracks so ya'll can hear them I believe the fastest mp3 encoder, MP3 Compressor, was taken offline because of some copyright infringment stink with the company that developed the codec it used. There's another encoder called MPEG Layer-3 Producer Professional, but it's like 400 dollars US, and is a bit slower than Compressor. I use mpeg Encoder, which is slow as hell, but it gets the job done. And it's supposedly the only freeware encoder that's legal. So I think unless you can get a copy of MP3 Compressor somehow, you're gonna be stuck waiting forever to get your tracks done. BTW, I found all this out at http://www.aznet.net/~chovy/music/recording/encode_mp3.html Chris

Hi, I'd like to find some Aphex Twin, Autechre and Squarepusher rare tracks on MP3 but apparently, the first two sites have been closed down for good. Does anyone know if they have actually been mirrored elsewhere and if there's a good Squarepusher MP3 site anywhere on the net ? Thank you very much for your help, Topher.
