I caught the new Madonna video for "Frozen" on MTV last night, and it turns out to be directed by Chris Cunningham, the dude who did "Come to Daddy". The new video is nowhere as great as the Aphex one, but it's got some nice shots and effects, esp. the dissolves from Madonna into various creatures. Although, based on the three videos of his (Autechre, Aphex, Madonna) that I've seen, I'm beginning to think the man knows exactly one single color palette. Random tidbit: I just read about some movie named "Black Dog" - starring Patrick Swayze and (of all people) Meatloaf. I wonder if Ken would be interested in doing some soundtrack work... I think High Llamas are the main proginetors of the post-Beach Boys sound. I saw them open up for Stereolab last November and it sounded like Brian Wilson had escaped from whatever home he is in and was playing on stage. By the way, it was good! Check out the issue of Option magazine with Stereolab on the cover (issue before last); it has an entire article on all these new Beach Boys/Bacharach/Gainsbourg bands; i.e., High Llamas, Supersticks, etc. Ironically the same issue has an article where a writer subjects Steve Reich and Phillip Glass to records by mu-Ziq, Orbital and others. The reaction was not good! At 11:59 PM +1300 2/18/98, Space Cadet wrote:

Yeah, and then he could do the music for a commercial about "Black Dog" beer... (It's a microbrew in the U.S. for those who have no idea what I'm talking about.) ;-)

youre right i have no idea what youre talking about! what the hells a 'microbrew'!!!! ;-) Steve -- In England and especially in Edinburgh the citizens bubble coal gas through Klim - a horrible form of powdered milk tasting like rancid chalk - and pick up on the results. They hock everything to pay the gas bill, and when the man comes round to shut it off for the non-payment, you can hear their screams for miles. When a citizen is sick from needing it he says, "I got the klinks" or "That old stove climbing up my back." - Old Bull Lee

In the States, basically a beer/lager that is not mass produced is considered a microbrew, in the simplest definition. ;-)

microwbrews are akin to small indapendant record labels. they are basicly home brewers who bottle and distribute their own beer much in the same way a small label would create and distribute their own music...the reasons are usually the same for both. oddly enough, due to the recent interest in these microwbrews and the associated "craze" a good number of them are contracting out to commercial mass production breweries to produce and distribute their product much in the same way as many small labels are signing distribution deals with other larger entities...the reasons are usually the same for both. for instance - sam addams, a small new england brew which has quite a reputation is being produced at the genesee brewery (yech) here in rochester and now enjoys the sams mass-market appeal and its associated trendiness as say rephlex or mu-ziq do after partnering with sony and virgin respectivly. some of the major corporate breweries have also stooped to establishing their own microbrews in an attempt to profit. cheers j

Small breweries where people make their own lager (err....Beer). What's up with all of these Black Dog shirts? I've seen the first one at a Tortoise gig, and thought it was some kind of tour thing, but on the back it said "Martha's Vineyard" and has a black dog on the front. When I first saw it I was like they didn't play at martha's vineyard. Is this the same beer you guys are talking about? Rusty

The Black Dog is a famous restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. They've been around for quite a while. No idea if they produce a beer, but I don't think so. ObIDM: Can anyone review the Pizzicato Five remix CD? The remixers look cool, but I can't say I'm a big fan of the band at all. NP: Neil Young - Arc -- Adam J Weitzman, Individual, Inc. Well, most of the remixes are way to weird to review. They're not getting very good response on the p5 mailing list (which I manage) but that's probably because people expected more danceable stuff and because 1 month ago p5 have also released a japanese remix album (Readymade Records Remixes on Triad) which is much more accesible to the average p5 fan. I have to say that I like most of the remixes very much. Of all the 12"s released by now (the cd will compile most of the tracks of this 8x12" collection) I'd pick Dimitri, 808 State, Oval, Gus Gus, Momus, St. Etienne, Dj Dara & The Shoot-er as my favourites, but the last 12" (#8, released on 3/24) is supposed to have mixes by Sean O'Hagan and Beck, which sound really interesting... The styles range from 80's house (Dimitri from Paris), Squarepusher-like weirdos (Momus), electronic delicatessen (Oval), minimal techno operas (Daniel Miller & Gareth Jones, with a 20min remix), technopop (St. Etienne), good d'n'b (The Shoot-er), experimental jazz (John Oswald), some nuhouse (Gus Gus), etc etc In all, I think it's pretty far away from the image u might have of p5. I'm sure u can find several tracks which'll suit your tastes... bye! Jose C. Shinu-mae ni tatta ichido dake de ii, omoikiri waratte-mitai. Hi no ataru oodoori o, kuchibue fuite aruite yuku.
