any thoughts on this one?? i know it sounds like a VERY cool concept... but it is still just a concept, so is it worth 60 bucks?? do all the 'songs' sound alike?? would it fall into the same catagory as the Nota infinity release on rastermusic??IBS (intelligent background sound), as i called it in the review.... i still can't decide if i wan't to shell out sixty smackers.. i mean that's 6 12"s. maybe one of you'd be able to put some real audio up?? (is there any at the irdial site?? sorry i didn't check yet... so shoot me) mult. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. (is there any at the irdial site?? sorry i didn't check yet... so shoot me) I write: Well I have this, and it is *very fucking weird*, and spooky. It's just people saying numbers, in different langauges, over and over again, for hours. Also there are bars from certain songs (which sound classical in origin) that repeat ad nauseum. Very nerve racking and intense, but if you're into weirdo conceptual shit, I would get it. It would be great for sampling, but it explicitly says do not sample this stuff. The booklet, which details the history of these recordings, which I guess still go on today, is very interesting. Has anyone on this list listened to a short wave radio? I wonder if you would hear similar transmissions. As a matter of fact, after listening to this stuff, I went out to Radio Shack and priced out short wave radios. They are about $200, and would be great for sampling. My .02 Nate

Absolutely - just for the fact that the purpose and history of numbers stations scares the hell outta me.
quoted 1 line do all the 'songs' sound alike??> do all the 'songs' sound alike??
Absolutely not - lots of different voices, background noises, music, etc. Some stations are morse, some are noise, some are English, some Slavic, some Spanish, etc.
quoted 3 lines maybe one of you'd be able to put some real audio up??> maybe one of you'd be able to put some real audio up?? > (is there any at the irdial site?? sorry i didn't check yet... so shoot > me)
Check the Irdial site. :-) They've got a *massive* set of pages up on it - www.pcug.co.uk/~irdial. Don't think the stuff is in RealAudio, but there are digitized clips. Hope this helps.... cya brian -------------------------------------------------------- "The most dementing of all modern sins: the inability to distinguish excellence from success." - David Hare

Yes, this was my number two release of '97.
quoted 2 lines i know it sounds like a VERY cool concept... but it is still just a>i know it sounds like a VERY cool concept... but it is still just a >concept, so is it worth 60 bucks??
Yes. And then some.
quoted 1 line do all the 'songs' sound alike??>do all the 'songs' sound alike??
Mostly. A very squelchy female voice (presumably synthesized) announces 'one, peacock, zeit, zero, zero, absinthe, mahogany, thirty-four, october' over a high-noise floor. Often interlaced with digital signals in the audible range.
quoted 2 lines would it fall into the same catagory as the Noto infinity release on>would it fall into the same catagory as the Noto infinity release on >rastermusic?
No, that was an installation commisioned by the Documenta X people for Carsten. It involved more than sound. This is non-musical data presented as music/perceived sound. I could wax endlessly about the origins of the 'transmissions' but I've got no more information than the booklet (rather FAT) and some heresy from articles, mostly wrong.

If this decription paralells elective surgery in your enjoyment range... Well don't get it. Otherwise...
