this was my original message, got a stoopid mailer daemon thing again for my laughable misspellings of hyperreal (sad I know) My goal is to find a perfect balance between cheap gear and MAXIMUM live improvisation. The kit list, rather shitty as of yet, but making do Yamaha CS1x [synth/master kbrd] Roland MC-505 [beats, noises] Akai S1000 [even weirder noises, harder beats] Yamaha SU-10 [phrase sampler] Alesis MMT-8 [seq for CS1x, SU, and S1000] Mac running MOTU Performer and Rebirth 2.0 (I actually bought it, so there) I really want to get rid of the 505 and get everything it has, component based, but that's difficult because of some of the features it has. The sequencer can reload a pattern and all patches to original start points instantly, no matter how far off you tweak the sounds. I think that MIDI patch changes aren't as instant, am I right? The 505 has a feature where you can program a little pattern or hit or sequence or whatever, then trigger it real-time (banks of 16 sequences) It has 3 stereo outs, really nice for sending the kick, etc to a separate channel. Built in FX processor. But I want to do it all by components now. I don't want those tons of synth sounds. To replace it I'd like a: TR-707 MMT-8 x2 [or a Kawai Q-80ex] DW-8000 Some good FX processors Yamaha RY-30 (these are pretty cool from what I've heard, the poor man's R-8] Hey question: I'm dying to start out on FM synthesis, I know you all are way into that. Squarepusher, AFX, and ?-ziq all use those old FM synths to get their neato leads right? That FS1-r is floating around, but I'd rather start out on one of those cheaper old TX-whatever modules? any suggestions? ones around $125? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Actually, your kit seems quite big... Just to put it in perspective, I have a Mac, Kurzweil K-2000, a little out board alises FX processor, and a 12 channel mixer. It works great for me. And, All of my recent stuff is entirely Computer based (CubaseVST LM-4 and Reaktor). So, I guess what I'm saying is that it's all relative. By the way, AXF, Squarepusher and even µ-ziq mainly use software synthesis on PowerBooks for there music. This is especially true for Aphex. I have a question though, What's wrong with the 505? It sounds like you got a good thing going. As far as FM synths go, get a TX81z that's the best one and it's multitimbral. Yamaha also made a keyboard version called the DX-11. -=GB=- -----Original Message----- From: Ghetto TR-707 [mailto:ghetto_tr707@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 08, 2000 9:26 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: (idm) Oops, gear talk this was my original message, got a stoopid mailer daemon thing again for my laughable misspellings of hyperreal (sad I know) My goal is to find a perfect balance between cheap gear and MAXIMUM live improvisation. Ok, this is wavering on off-topic, but I just have to get my 2 cents in. The '81z fills in most of the regular FM synth sounds, plus some wacky ones. Sounds better through an analog filter for a bit of a softer sound. And BTW, I've never heard too many aphex twin or u-ziq songs where they use FM synth sounds for the lead. Some folks like programming the 6-ops more than the 4-ops, but as was already mentioned, you get different waveforms too. BUT I've heard some really great DX7IIFD patches which blow the doors off anything I've ever done on the 81z; really complex evolving weirdness. Reminded me of some CZ-101 patches, in terms of weirdness. I own a slim, trim music making setup which I love. Waldorf 4pole, Waldorf pulse, akai s2000, peavey SP, oberheim matrix-1000 (gotta have at least one for IDM!), yamaha tx81z, lexicon vortex, digitech s100, alesis mmt8, mackie 1202vlz (x2), alesis wedge (x2), peavey PC-1600, kawai mm-16, nord micro modular. Also a k62-450mhz PC to run everything on. If anybody has any questions about these, I'd be happy to answer them off-list. Also: the TR-505 is absolutely wack. Please don't subject anybody to its weak sampled sounds! Thanks for the help with the FM stuff. There's a Matrix-1000 floating around in this room at my school and I might be able to buy it off them for cheap. So it sounds good? It really is analog? Do you hafta program it with SysEx or will CC's work?

I didn't say TR-505 did I?? Naw, I have an MC-505, which definitley has some wack sounds of it's own that I hate, but it's a live Godsend. But hey, the TR-505 will actually do some seriously cool stuff when used properly. Imagine running it through some extreme eq, then distortion or something, then sequencing out some nutty AFX breakbeats on a software sequencer, I'd do it if someone gave me a TR-505. Plus, it's the cheapest TR sequencer available, people forget that you can build techno tracks with the sequencer vey nicely on that thing.
