Ok, this is wavering on off-topic, but I just have to get my 2 cents in. The '81z fills in most of the regular FM synth sounds, plus some wacky ones. Sounds better through an analog filter for a bit of a softer sound. And BTW, I've never heard too many aphex twin or u-ziq songs where they use FM synth sounds for the lead. Some folks like programming the 6-ops more than the 4-ops, but as was already mentioned, you get different waveforms too. BUT I've heard some really great DX7IIFD patches which blow the doors off anything I've ever done on the 81z; really complex evolving weirdness. Reminded me of some CZ-101 patches, in terms of weirdness. I own a slim, trim music making setup which I love. Waldorf 4pole, Waldorf pulse, akai s2000, peavey SP, oberheim matrix-1000 (gotta have at least one for IDM!), yamaha tx81z, lexicon vortex, digitech s100, alesis mmt8, mackie 1202vlz (x2), alesis wedge (x2), peavey PC-1600, kawai mm-16, nord micro modular. Also a k62-450mhz PC to run everything on. If anybody has any questions about these, I'd be happy to answer them off-list. Also: the TR-505 is absolutely wack. Please don't subject anybody to its weak sampled sounds!
