Have you actually heard any recent stuff by Alec Empire or any Atari Teenage Riot? I've seen Atari Teenage Riot play in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, they plated at a festival which headlined The Prodigy, a lot of "gabbers" were there for The Prodigy and ATR was too loud for them, imagine that ... It's not just loud, really aggressive and all, I like it. Not something you can listen to all day though ... Compared to ATR or Alec Empire, Autechre is elevator music, really good elevator music though :) Later, Sasja // Sasja "CHrOmE" Barentsen chrome@xs4all.nl -o- http://www.xs4all.nl/~chrome/

I remember seeing this lot and they were awful. Really weak sounding drum machines with unimaginitive synths on top and really stupid lyrics. This was a couple of years ago now and it`s possible that Alec Empire has since hooked up with them and sorted them out. Tim On Thu, 3 Oct 1996, A.M. Barentsen wrote:

I guess it's called "progression" some of Empire's old stuff was quite bad, or at least when you compare it to stuff today, but ain't that the thing with this kind of music anyway? All I can say that the Atari Teenage Riot gig was quite an experience, sure it was really chaotic and they were shouting lyrics over it which you couldn't understand, still Alec Empire's "The Destroyer" is one of my fave records from this year ... Call me strange ... Guess I'm the only one who doesn't understand why everybody is talking about Squarepusher and almost nobody seems to like Empire's stuff. I dunno, aside from mutated "amen" jungle breaks, I see little in common with Squarepusher material. "The Destroyer" doesn't really come close to the programming finesse exhibited on Tom Jenkinson's releases; it's really too sloppy for comparison, and is imbued with much more of a punk spirit than the d&b jazz of 'Feed Me Weird Things' or some of the other SP 12"s. The closest SP analogue is the 'Peace Nail' track on Dragon Disc 2, and even that is much more structured, as tortured and FXed as the breaks might be... GD

Yes, on the subject of Empire, Alec... I wonder if I should purchase "the destroyer"... I thought it was an EP, but I have seen the CD of it and it seems more like an album to me... what does it sound like? Is it really as intense as everyone says? Is it dark and evil and such, or does it have the same cheesy tinny digital trance type two chord keyboard schlocky as 99% of everything out there? (I know he's from Germany...) By the way, you should all get Bochum's new album, and while you're at it purchase the original "In Sound From Way Out" by Perrey/Kingsley. Cheese fest.

count me as a fan as well. I really dig his King of the Street 10 inch as well as the destroyer. Not to mention Low on Ice, and Generation Star wars. I was not so impressed with Two Space Cowboys on a bad trip, his collaboration with Ian Pooley probably due to the housey 4 on the floor beat. Mr Empire has some wicked techniques for getting a sound to float out of the speaker and hoover a couple of seconds and then zip back in. Giggles

I really dig Alec's stuff and I really dig Tom's stuff. I guess the reason sqpr is always discussed here is cos it demonstrates 'intelligence' which 'The Destroyer' certainly didn't. Yeah, it's a great record, but it's pure adrenaline, there's not much considered thought and reflection in there. Glad to see I'm not the only one with as many Alec Empire records as I can get my hands on (and believe me, I had to spit blood to get them here). Alec is one of my favourites with as a distinct feel to music as any of the big guns running around this list being mentioned all the time. So wipe the jazzy break smile from yer face for an hour or two and GET INTENSE for that's what Alec is with his cut'n'paste aesthetics or should I say cut'n'stickinyerface? Just picked up ATR's "Burn, Berlin, Burn!" What a pile of rubbish. I am listening to this so-called "Hardcore" and I am laughing. I'm not getting pissed, I'm laughing so hard because they think they are Hardcore. God, everything sounds like an 808 through heavy distortion, with some anime samples. And lyrics like "Come on, You stupid pig! Get the Fuck away!!!!!!!!!!" and I am not mistyping they actually put that many exclamation marks after everything. Why is this band so popular with the kiddies? Here's how you make an Atari Teenage Riot song: 1. Put a 4/4 bass drum loop into your 808. Put some 1/4 cybal crashes. 2. Set your tempo at 300 BPM 3. Hook your 808 through a distortion pedal. 4. Yell something like "Go!"...."Fuck it!"...."Government!"... Hell just get the Rebirth 338 demo and insert lyrics. Any disagreements? Rusty

One.. ATR is no less cheesy than every other so-called 'hardcore techno' band out there. And, well, being that I love punk rock, I find ATR insanely fun. 'Course, the band together isn't half as good as each member's solo works.

I can't stand punk but I like ATR quite a bit. It's not clever or anything.. but it's really fast and loud and angry.

Yes. Alec uses a 909 for ATR, not an 808. Besides, his CPU is not fast enough for ReBirth. :) Then another question occured and Danny Freer asked:

Hanin did an E.P. for DHR and an E.P. for Force Inc. years back. Carl hasn't got any records out, but contributed some bits for the Shizuo album. Greetings from Berlin, Thaddi

Yeah, I don't think ATR are taking the piss, they just think they're "hardcore". If you want fast and distorted, try Squarepusher's "Big Loada". It's much better. GD

ha ha. i really hope you're not trying to compare big loada (or any of tom j's work) to ATR. they're worlds, perhaps galaxies, apart. np. aphex 'flim' ------------------------------------------------- wells oliver : s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu "perhaps all pleasure is relief" : w.s.b. -------------------------------------------------
