If it's to do with ISP, then almost definately.

Me too, and the first one, if anyone could oblige.

Haven't heard much of either, but I prefer Q-Berts mix of Coldcut to Kid Koala's. Also, I've seen ISP vs the Clams Uv Death in my local store at import price (£6.99). Is it worth it and how does it compare with Q-Berts Coldcut mix, so that I can get an idea. Ditto for the Return of the DJ's volumes... Also, can anyone out there reccommend any of those scratch compilations/battle weapon type things (not breaks like the DJ Food series, but with more good sounds for scratching with). I've seen a few about, mostly DJ Rectangle's Ultimate Battle Weapon volumes. How much stuff do they contain? I want value for money (especially at 13 quid a piece)... Cheers, Gb.

now i don't know how old he really is, but i'm pretty sure he's not just a "kid". In any case, he DOES kick shit up pretty damned hard...not in terms of pure scratching, but in attitude, originality, and various other neat tricks... This is about the funniest thing I've heard all week. Went and saw the ninja boys three nights ago, and your dead wrong. Kev and pc's first 2x4 set was fucking amazing (the second one not soo hot, since half way thru, they dropped into a disco rut), coldcuts live set was brilliant with great visuals provided by hex, but you want to talk about mind blowing? Kid Koala. First off, he's just a kid...and a damn nice one at that, not once ounce of attitude. He just loves to get up there and fuck shit up. Second, I have no idea how he did 75 percent of the shit he did, and I know how to scratch. Third, no cans and his shit was always dead nuts on! I could go on and on, but the bottom line is I've seen the ISP's, the X-men and quite a few battles. Barring the body tricks that the old schoolers do, one on one, the kid would shut them all down. my 10 cents, brock ps: These guys do on the decks, what dj spooky can only have wet dreams about! Talk about deconstructing beats! np: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II CDROM

I have total respect for Kid Koala, hes certainly got mad skills.... i personally find his stuff a bit cliched. I really dont like the ninja tune style ..so all those wacky vocal samples on the ninja 10" start to get a bit annoying after a few listens. I dig Q-bert for the way he switches time signatures all the time easily skipping between 4/4, 3/4 and 7/8, plus he can do a whole set with just one record.... or two copies of one record. But then ive never seen either live, plenty of videos and mixtapes. so im basing my judgement on how they sound rather than perform (both of which are equally valid i guess) kid koala could be a better performer for the crowds, but id rather watch Q-bert standing there composed with that look on his face any day :-).... and you lot moan that we have all these good shows in the UK!!.. ive seen Squarepusher live too many times now... id eagerly swap a few for an ISP or X-men gig ;-) Steve /k/./F/

Eric (Kid Koala) would be the first one to admit that Q-Bert is a more skilled scratch-DJ than himself. For me (and the reason we signed Kid Koala) Koala has a much better composition style to what he does. He's not really a battle DJ at all, he's a wicked performer/DJ/recording artists who also has some mad scratching skills. He basically reminds us of where Coldcut were at 8 years ago. If you want young, you should check out Montreal's other finest A-Trak. World DMC champ at 15 years old. A-Trak and Koala did a blinding set together at the Deep Concentration show here in Montreal a few weeks ago. Cut Chemist rocked that night hard in my opinion. Started off by recreating 'Adventures on the Wheels of Steel' on 4 decks, moved to some hiphop classics, latin-jazz, funk, and ended up by throwing down the Mohawks 'The Champ' (always cracks me up when this goes down and there is that split second of people always screaming because they think it's KRS, and then they get all confused, same thing when he dropped Caravan by Liquid Liquid). Anyway, it ain't always about the scratch. Anyone else get the feeling sometimes at these scratch DJ shows that you might as well be at a Joe Satriani gig in the '80's with all those air scratches replacing the air guitaring.

I was at this show...my first time seeing A-Trak...it was really surprising. I kept seeing this little(and i mean small..realllly young) kid hanging out with the DJ's, and i was thinking maybe he was the brother of a DJ or something...then a couple sets later he hit the decks and ripped shit up...absolutely amazing...if you want to see a talented KID, A-Trak should impress you enough. How do you get such skills so young? Chalk it up to raw talent? I wonder when this kid started DJing, because i just never had such musical and rhythmic sense at that age...wow! I rmember something to the effect of this: He's 15, he started djing 3 years ago, he won DMC, and The Piklz made him a member. Not too shabby. I have a set he did on a great Columbia U underground hiphop radio show. This boy doesn't just juggle beats--he juggles disses, combining two sentences in a variety of ways. The rest of his set blew the X-men away (they were also on the show) as well. Unfortunately, my double tape deck only records in one channel. otherwise I'd be glad to dub the set for people. Sam

That's why beat juggling is interesting. it's harder to recognize than scratching, and half the time I've been at dj competitions I have no idea what the crowd is cheering for because I'm not experienced enough with hiphop beats to recgnize a great one on first listen. However, the X-men do beat juggling really well--they also do body tricks, but that's just some old-skool/crowd-pleasing style. The substance of their sets is "rocking the funky beats", whereas I'm under the impression that the Piklz are more about scratching. Sam
