Now I know I am probably the thousandth person to comment on the new release by RDJ, but let me anyway. After buying it and rushing home to give it a listen, I was shocked. What the fuck is this Come to Daddy shit? Is that for real? I could have "written" a better track with my Casio keyboard and cassette recorder. Is this what we call Intelligent Dance music? I've always thought of RDJ as a mediocre musician with a few good works to his name, but this was crazy. Then I listened to Flim. Beautiful, Playful melody with a child-like beauty. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Went through the rest of the album and almost threw up at the rancidity of the Shit on there. I'm trying to figure out how the execs at Sire records kept a straight face while approving this release (they probably kept looking at predicted sales figures after the MTV hyping and "TECHNO HITS THE US!" fanfare going around.) But to my surprise, along comes the little ditty IZ-US. Again, melodic, pleasing synths with a catchy, yet all-to-common swingish beat. What sample CD did he rip that from - "Basic drum loops Vol 1? Either way the song is enjoyable. I'll tell you, this RDJ bullshit is ridiculous. Its a shame that even in a non-mainstream vein such as IDM, we still have our pop stars and bandwagon idols - RDJ is NO exception. He has it all - the Logo, the secure label contract, and the wacky gimmick persona. I think I should start a calculated campaign and approach MCA. My new IDM/"Techno is USA" hero is called Rubber Ducky. I have a logo with a ducky grooving to some tunes a la Plastikman. And my gimmick is to sample ducks having sex with a distorted breakbeat running in the background? I hear a five million dollar cash advance guys...let me go work on this - tlak ya later! I see you point, and I was abou tto comment on the Prodigy likeness. But Parody is good and fine once in a while, un;ess you are Wierd AL Yankovic. I had Hoped that RDj's flunecy with his synths would make for more than just parody. While there is some humor to be gained from this, it isnt much. The Prodigy in and of themselves are a gag as it is. Is it really necessary to show how much of a bullshit act they are? Pisstakes are funny, but RDJ seems like one big pisstake himself. To show how bad others are is best accomplished by showing how GOOD oneself is! I for one wil not buy another Aphex related item if his modus operandi is to perform a musical commentary on pop music. well, i've tried both (tying shoes and writing music that is). i can say pretty much without question that i've got tying the ole shoes altogether figured out... but when it comes to writing "iz-us", well, it ain't quite there yet. thanks for the encouragement, tho. joking aside, i've got to admit that i think you're totally wrong. saying "aphex twin is overrated!" is much different from saying "anyone could write that crap!". the first statement is pretty easily argued when someone is built up like richard has been. the second just shows you can only see the world in black and white. personally i think his reaction to being repeatedly built up and torn down has been pretty entertaining. hell, if people were lobbing rocks at me because of the ridiculously wonderful things other people had said about me, i'd take the piss now and then, too. and then still make it heartachingly beautiful just to rub in the fact that they were right. out ... art

Fuck, I hate to get in on this (as it was all started through some pretty obvious flame baiting) but I've heard this come up several other time so I guess it's ok. I've never considered Come to Daddy to be a pisstake or some kind of comment on the prodigy. If anything on first listen I thought it was a nod to industrial music and the sort of evil satanic metal kids used to be so into in the eighties (and a pretty good one at that). I actually like the track and think it's one of Richard's more interesting experiments - trying to fuse the really out-there rhythms that the twin and squarepusher are using these days with a good old school guitar thunder thrashing. Also, he's tried to blend the two elements together seamlessly and has thankfully avoided the full on trainwreck of noise approach that Atari Teenage Riot have taken. Oh, and it also has some great hooks and is quite catchy. If this is pop, give me more... da' GnZ pa Speaking of pop, anyone else out there into the new Spice Girls single, Spice up Your Life? It has a great sound, thicker than molasses.

first time i heard it (pappy mix), i thought "uh oh... richard's been talking to trent too much lately..." the prodigy thing never even crossed my mind, but i definitely thought it sounded like nine inch nails. and even as much as there are some really annoying parts to it, i agree with gonzi - it *is* catchy, even with those stupid howls during one of the bridge (?) sections. in fact, the only track that doesn't have any musical merit for me is the mummy mix, and that gets some redemption from "you've got so many machines, richard!" now i wish i had brought it to work with me. oh well. have to settle for the new plaid, which i really like so far, by the way. myopia is just great. i love the way the vocals towards the end go from sounding ominous to uplifting. need to go listen some more. alan! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Agreed : I got mine yesterday and though I've listened through it about 4 times over, it's not enough for all the diverse bits to sink in. I do agree with previous posts that have commented on the diversity (or 'patchiness' in the more derogatory reviews) of this album, but it certainly keeps the listener on your toes because, unlike say, Jimpster - where you know what you're getting from track 1 right through to the end - this is not consistent in genre or sound. Which I don't think is a bad thing - it's certainly varied and lots of it is excellent. On a different note : could some of our graphic designers please advise me (in private) regarding the semiotic relevance and significance of the rubber gloves on the Plaid cover? I can follow that there are two gloves (ie. 2 hands - not "three") and then there's the repeat reference on the foldout inside sleeve of the yellow rubber glove. Does this portray the sound of the music? Must one handle with care? Is it corrosive / allergenic / dangerous? Huh? I * np : Dif Juz - Extractions

come on now - whatever that track is, it's humourous. i mean, it is just a joke at the expense of the metal/industrial groups who take themselves so seriously. just stand in the middle of that track, and listen... those howls! the track makes me piss my pants with laughter every time i hear it.. also, notice the production, it has no bass, it's all compressed and crunched up to fuck, it's got a pop production. pity the poor mtv kids who think this track is cool... not that i don't like it, i think it's great! and really, some people here seem to be stuck in one mode as far as listening to music goes, which is quite sad.. we have people who can't appreciate the new digital cut-up music on come to daddy, others complain when they hear a vocal - and to be honest, i don't think it's down to taste - people just don't listen to the music in the right way.. i'll admit i used to think the same things about vocals and acoustic instruments in electronic music. basically i just grew up. there is no point in listening to music that offers no surprises, people who do that may as well just buy wallpaper

seems to me the two threads about aphex fit together... richard loves ween. richard's music has a sense of humor, which can occasionally overshadow the music itself, and which people tend to either love or hate (or don't understand). richard can mimic other styles, perhaps mockingly, and yet the song is still wonderful, with or without the pop references. surely there's a connection there, somewhere... hmmm. btw, i think "come to daddy" is great. made me laugh at points, repeatedly made me wish i was capable of writing music like that, even pissed me off a couple times. great fun. of course, there was nothing to compare to the last track on ween's latest. the gong kills me every time, mang. hahaha ... art

My favorite song on the new Ween album is "The Mollusk". Amazing sounds and production from the boys. Now that I think of it, there is a lot of similarity between Ween and RDJ. Funny how they can be so similar, but be so different. What I REALLY want to hear: Ween doing a techno/house album. bbn
