seeing as everyone's looking for (what i am going to call) 'complicated jungle' (e.g. plug, JOS, squarepusher etc) i thought it worth mentioning the leaf releases. the two boymerang eps are superb, but at the moment, my favourite is the Luger EP. it's got the most amazing drum programming i've ever heard. there are no two bars the same, it keeps going and going and going and just throwing the rhythm all over the place. i really like it. but i was wondering; has this guy released anything else? i've never heard the name 'luger' any where else. the tracks are credited to 'joe gray'. one of them is co-written with (sampled from?) j. haynes and mixed by s. vispi. btw, all joyrex's are 45. for my ears. a friend of mine tried to convince me j5 was 33, but i wasn't having any of it. anyone coming to stealth tomorrow night? i hear mr. vibert's there for our entertainment. cyathere. l8 keith duncan == unkind cheat kduncan@enterprise.net

Indeed. The first track on the "CAT 005" side sounds like it's on Mandrax at 33. About track titles, though. I got my J5 in real time, when it came out, and perhaps as such, it came with just a plain inner sleeve, no jacket of any sort. No track titles on the "CAT 005" side, and as for the 4 Kings of Clubs on the other side, they ain't talkin'. Who found out the track titles and where? i just got the luger 12" on leaf yesterday. man, this shit rivals anything i've heard out of plug. i mean, "plug 2" is still a classic, but anything off the luger is as good, if not better: better, possibly, in that it's not as cheesy (cheese, as we all know, ages well to a point, at which the odor becomes overwhelming), it's more dynamic, equally as intricate (and nowhere near as facile) and much more "musical" (in the sense that its power doesn't seem to derive from ironic quotation and synchronic juxtaposition...although that isn't all plug has going for it, to be sure). anyway, i hate to praise luger only by way of contrast, so i should probably say this is just an amazing record in its own right. extremely listenable and satisfying on a variety of different levels. now to find those boymerang twelves... sc p.s. second thought, did anyone else almost sprain their wrist seizing the boymerang remix of collapsed lung off the decks? jeez...godawful.

My only problem with this 12" is the heavy sampling on it. All that ambient noodling is from a Front 242 disc... possibly "Off" because I couldn't find it on "Up Evil." And that climactic orchestral symphonic melody in the middle is from that classic James Bond movie, "Moonraker." Now if you strip away everything that Luger sampled, the only thing you've got left is the drum programming. And damn it, his sequencing ability is incredible. I agree with Aaron on this one. When I first put on this release, I thought the background sounded familiar, and then I realized it was from F242. It is a quite excellent 12" in itself, but for comparison's sake I'd argue that the Plug 12"s are much more musical and intricately programmed. There's a lot more going on (sample/sound manipulation-wise) in the Plug releases than stringing together a bunch of cheesy samples in an ironic fashion. GD

another quick question for you idmers, i was just relistening to my luger 12 on leaf and wondered what ever became of this artist. considering that this 12 is over a year old now, one would think that there must be new material recorded somewhere. anybody have any knowledge of other luger releases, remixes, etc. thanks john.c

Luger is Joe Gray - he's also half of THE OCCUPIERS (with Tony Wilson - AKA Mr. Psyche), whose track "Sniper" appears on _Miscellaneous the 2nd_ (Language). Joe had another single or two on some very tiny and obscure label. GuerillaG2-G4/ gg np: Akasha - s/t (BAT)
